garage door opener on visor
 

My question is about the homelink universal garage door opener system
I took delivery of my 2011 super duty a couple of weeks ago and when it arrived noticed I forgot to order the door opener system on the visor which I realy wanted. How does this system work and will I be able to just order a visor with homelink and program it to my door openers or is the system more complicated than that? Nobody @ the dealer seems to know and I know there are alot of smart people on this site that will know the answer ,so I told them I would find out for all of us...

thanks but I want to use the ford system if possible as I have the reverse camera in my rear view mirror. I am hoping it is a wireless system and I can just buy the visor

I did the same thing when I bot my 2005 F-350. The dealers parts department got me the part as the home link was part of the purchase. Long story short, it never did work for me. The wiring required was not there, and I was gun shy of cutting wires. Good luck. Maybe it is pre wired in your truck.

Yeah I have to agree, depending on what model you got, the wiring might not be there. And if it isnt, it will be a pain to wire it up, esp on a new truck.

Is the ford garage door openers not like the GM's? My denali had a stand by unit that you would press a certain code in and it would flash, than you would click your garage door opener and it would do a certain number of blinks than work. All it required was power as it had its own lil control chip.

The power is the problem. When I tried to do it, I had a wire with about one inch or less that plugged into the old sunvisor, for the vanity mirror. Presumably that wire was hot as the mirror has an on switch when opened. I just did not want to take a chance of causing a short and then having to rip out the head liner. So I went without, although I think I left the sun visor with the home link installed when I traded. So if someone out there hates me, I do understand!

I am impressed with the photographs and directions in Beefstalker's write up. Still the problem I had was tha the plug on the new visor, containing the homelink, was different than the plug on the visor without.

I would have had to rip both visors apart. I could see the trash can filled with two visors and no visor on my truck. Beefstalker is a great photographer and even greater Mechanic! Above my level.

Try looking on ebay for "Homelink", many different car companies use it so you can find alot of different styles and shapes that you can install in places besides the visor.

I dont think the opener would use anymore power than the vanity mirror. Most people dont use that anyways. You can disconnect it and use that to power the buttons if you like. Or just dont use both at the same time.

More than two wires connecting with a plug: Male/female. It was beyond me. I am just trying to help out some one else that attempts to connect. I don't know the gauge, but the wires were hair thin.

Today, one hour at $85.00/hour kills a lot of good ideas.

It is a 350 crew cab lariat trim with the upgraded convenience package , which i thought included the garage door opener. so from what I get from all the posts is that I should check and see if there is a wire already there for the power. Is the control module for the unit in the visor its self?

Its not even included in a package on the kingranch. It was a extra option.

I kinda wish i woulda got lucky enuf to find me a kingranch f350 as monthly I will be maxing out the payload on my truck. I guess it can handle 3000lb as my sierra i would occassionaly give it the 3000lb treatment and it never gave
