Did the SPD Y-pipe upgrade.
 

I couldn't find the old thread we all talked about this, so created this new one.
I put on the SPD Y pipe yesterday. Only took a couple of hours, the vast majority of which is cutting, fitting, cut a little more, fit some more.
Anyhow, that is all I changed was the Y-pipe. In the previous thread I had mentioned that 2 years ago I had replaced the P/S manifold studs with the improved Ford pieces, due to the originals breaking. About a year after that I developed another leak and figured the bolts had snapped yet again. I was wrong! The manifold had a small rust hole / crack in the bottom near the block, but I was able to weld that up.
Eventually I will be adding a new muffler, the stock one is leaking where the straps hold the heat shield.
But I did nothing but the Y-pipe so I could verify its benefits.
Sound: I think the truck has a little deeper tone at idle. While driving, you can hear the exhaust a little in the Y-pipe area under the floor. Its not a leak, you can just hear the hollow sound of exhaust flowing through the pipe.
Performance: Off-idle throttle response is much more instantaneous. At low RPM I can feel a big difference. I mashed it a few times up to about 60mph, feels like the motor revs a little quicker. I have not towed anything yet, and I think that is where I will see a big improvement.
Does it add the claimed 33 hp? I don't know, thats a lot for just a Y-pipe upgrade but the stock piece HAS to kill at least 15hp.
I am very happy with the change, recommend it to anyone's truck with that piece of poo stock pipe.:-headbang

Did mine about a year ago, the throttle response was greatly improved. And so far a year later it still puts a smile on my face when I hit the loud pedal. Put a cc cheby in its place the other night, he was looking at tail lights.

Careful when cutting out the original Y-pipe. The factory steel is double walled and tuff! Get many sawzall blades. You will see that after the Y, the exhaust heads towards the Cat. There is a bolt together union just before the cat, just ahead of a cross member. All the vibration from the saw broke the pipe off at that union. I had to re-weld that as well. Wasn't too big of a deal, bud it did add to the work.

Im in the same boat. I bought the SPD Y about 2 months ago, but haven't had the time to get it into the shop. I don't own a welder, so i called the local exhaust shop. They quoted me only $80 to do it... I just hope all that vibration doesn't pop off all my exhaust manifold studs...:-banghead

Maybe i will request that they use a plasma cutter to get the old pipe out.

I would say the new piece should flow just a bit better!

Is this y pipe mostly for the 99-04 trucks? I swear my Y pipe looks nothing like the one in the picture above. I have an 07 V10.

Yep, i think the 07 has dual cats... its a much better setup.

To me, with my '01, which already had ebay headers and a VOlant intake, the y-pipe did NOT increase the max HP.

If DID however greatly increase the throttle response at low RPMs. Much nicer to drive in stop-and-go traffic, but overall I don't think it really added anything to the max HP.

On top of those mods, I added the 5-star 87 octane performance tune, and went from a 10 second 0-60, down to a 9.02-9.04 second 0-60, confirmed with datalogging. Amazing

Is SPD Performance still in business? I placed an order on their website and paid via Paypal a week ago and haven't received a shipping notice yet and the phone number listed on their webiste does not get answered by SPD.

this is an old thread but to answer your question yes they are still in bussiness. i went thru the same problems as you. i ordered mine and one month to the day it was on my door step when i got home from work. still sitting in the box it came in as i havent had the time. but be patienent it will come
