Coolant filter plugged after only 200 miles!

I flushed my cooling system and replaced the coolant with ELC 200 miles ago. While I was in there, I installed the dieselsite coolant filter. Well, the other day I when to check my coolant filter and it was ice cold after driving 20 minutes. So I stopped by napa today and picked up a new filter. When I changed it, I chopped open the old one to see what was in it. It was full of what looks like jell-o. WTF? There eas also sand in there which is to be expected but the gel stuff has me worried. It looks like (and probably is) gelled coolant. I am worried that it just filtered out the coolant part and lowered my % of coolant in the system.

Any thoughts? Coolant is Zerex heavy duty ELC coolant.

Jell-O? Did you do a good enough flush before you put the ELC in? What year is your truck, and did you have green in it before?

I flushed through a LOT of water, so I doubt that is the problem. Took the thermostat out and everything.

It's a 2000 7.3 that came from the factory with green coolant.

That would be fall out. Same thing happened to me. Second filter, no problems.

Did you use distilled water to flush the system? Did you do a complete flush as in remove the block drain plugs?

When you mix OAT (green) and ELC the reaction between the two is Jello. This is not good. Usually you have a lot of sand in the filter not jello.

hmmm... it seems like it could have been the filter itself, it could have had some kind of chemical in it

spdmpo 03-31-2010 04:22 PM

Or he didn't get all of the green out.

patrickke 03-31-2010 04:32 PM

this is true

Hope you're not using filters charged with SCAs!! That would do it too. AND you need to flush the system again......... :-banghead

Do the Baldwin Filters from Dieselsite have SCAs in them?

I have no idea, but I would guess Bob sells both. Look up the part number of the one you have and see what it says. Or call Bob. LOL

It is supposed not to have any SCA's in the baldwin filter. I know the napa gold filter I just picked up doesn't have any.

Bob sells the NO precharged Baldwin filters, he doesn't like them and for obvious reasons. B-5134 filters for our applications. Also, at 10.50 a filter, they are rather inexspensive IMO opposed to other places. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...id=226981&.jpg

Just want to let you guys know that I put a good 500+ miles on the napa filter and it is still flowing like new. I duno why that first filter plugged up with gel. All seems to be good now.
