Electric brake controller for Explorer...
I have an '04 Explorer, 4.6l V-8 w/class III receiver from the factory. I have a pop-up trailer (approx. 2800lbs) w/electric brakes. Can someone give me advice as to what brand of brake controller is the best and tips on how to install it? I wasn't sure if Explorers come with any pre-wiring installed from the factory? Any help will be apprciated.

A Tekonsha Prodigy will give you the best bang for your $$$; get it with the plug-n-play harness for your Explorer. The under-dash connector is bitchy to find. Drop/remove the glove box and then look behind/up/toward the center; the connector (gray or white, 3-over-3 with 5 wires to it) will be taped up there. You'll still have to run the wiring to the driver's side. Good luck! Steve |
Is that it? No splicing wires to get power? No running wires to the back of the vehicle? Just plug into the connector and mount the unit somewhere on the drivers side of the vehicle and I'm done?

Check your owners manual and see if it identifies the trailer fuse item(s). Check if there is already a fuse installed at that location. |
If you have the tow package (2" receiver with 7-pin RV connector) and nobody's messed with the fuses/breakers required for towing, you're all set. I used a long tie-wrap to pull the harness over to the driver's side.
