Sad Day - Pics of the Wreck

Well, I had a woman rear end my truck on Sunday, while I was travelling to visit relatives. She claimed to have fallen asleep, but also admitted to sleep deprevation and taking Prozac because of issues related to having become a widow six months ago. Sad, but don't drive!

I had noticed irradic driving for miles including crossing the center line and suddenly tailgating me then backing off. Was a bit afraid to slow down to pull off of the road to let her pass. Got to a stop light behind several cars as we entered town and she pulled into a right turn lane (while my wife was trying to call law enforcement). Pulled away from the light and she pulled back behind me. About 100 yards ahead she started accelerating towards me and crossing the center line as if to pass, then boom and spin 180. Here's the results. Had to have the wrecker hook a chain hook to pull the fender off my rear wheel. Waiting to hear from her insurance now. she was driving a KIA Sportage.

Was a VERY clean vehicle up until this point.

Well I hope you're ok. Looks like she got the door on yah too. Did she do any damage to the frame at all?

tooldad 03-18-2010 09:15 AM

No frame damage that I am aware of. Drove it probably 180 miles afterwards, completing my trip. Would not have driven had the rental car business been open locally, but...

I did notice that at least two of the bolts that secure the bed to the frame had sheared off. The cross members were 1-1.5" off of the frame, caused by the buckling. A big question at this point is whether they will replace the entire bed or cut and weld. Anybody know how they could cut and weld the bed when it has the LineX bed liner?

1Aauto 03-18-2010 09:24 AM

From the pics I can see it looks like it would be more work to hang a quarter on the bed, it looks pretty banged up, and I can't see if the inside has shifted or buckled. I'd fight for a new one.

tooldad 03-18-2010 09:45 AM

Yeah, that was my thought too. Looks like a lot of labor to repair verses replace, not to mention the bedliner and final alignment quality concerns I have.

Regarding personal injuries, we have had some issues, but in the big picture, nothing serious. We are addressing the issues so they do not become worse over time.

Damn, that sucks man. I would be inclined to say your truck will be fine...but if you look in the 07+ Expy forum, a member (grtdain) just got his totaled out for a relatively minor looking fender bender as well

you might be totalled out since your truck is a 06. At minimum it looks like you need a whole bed, tailgate, bumper, rim/tire and minor bodywork on that door. Not to mention the respray costs

best of luck. I hope your frame ain't tweaked. The sheared bolts though have got me wondering

tooldad 03-18-2010 01:24 PM

Yeah, got me wondering too. The bed actually contacted the cab, but only seemed to leave a couple of scratches on the driver side. The bed cover (Bedlocker) is jacked around too (on account of the bed deformation) and jammed to the cab. Will keep you all posted. Still no word from the insurance adjuster.

I feel bad for you and you wife, hope you both recover quickly. It's only metal and paint, your lives are more inportant. Depending on your insurance company, you may have to fight for the Linex.

Yuk.....I always liked the look of your truck. I hope the body shop is able to restore it to its former glory and to your satisfaction.

Man sorry to hear about that. I had something similar happen to me this past summer. Glad everyone whas unharmed. Really work with the shop and insurance. Mine was a real hassle. Tailgate issues, and leaks developed in the transfer case tail shaft months later. I think it was accident related. Guy hit me square in the tow hitch though.

I just sold my F150 today. Never was right after the accident and I hated the 4.6 in a towing application.

Thanks, guys. OP insurance adjuster finally got on the scene late yesterday according to the body shop. They indicated the OP insurance has acceped the liability (formality) and expect to hear back from the adjuster Monday.

crabhab, I would have figured your truck would have looked worse at those speeds. You were very lucky as well it seems. Congrats on the new 250.

In other news, someone blew threw a stop sign on Feb.6 in front of my 16 yr old daughter, totalling her car. She was okay except for a sore/stiff neck for a couple of days. We just replaced her ride 3/7. She was a little freaked in this accident.

My wife was almost in a wreck on the way home from work today. The two cars in front of her did collide, but not too serious. Just too many close calls recently!

Wow, Maybe look into a rabbit foot carrying case or something. Glad your little girl and wife are OK.

Shaunjr_89 03-21-2010 03:09 AM

Sorry to hear the news as long as u ok, good luck with the fix.

tseekins 03-21-2010 07:13 AM

The KIA didn't look as bad as I would thought after taking a hit like that.

I wouldn't settle for anything less than a new bed, bumper and complete driveline inspection as well as other collateral damage repaired. Your truck is gorgeous and deserves the best.

Muddedprairie 03-21-2010 08:15 PM

I did notice the handy cap sign in the window... Makes you wonder... Glad you are ok ...
