How long will it take someone to do an EGR delete kit?

Just wondering how long it took you to do your EGR delete. I am thinking about doing one but if its a big job I may pay some one to do it.

ehgeeray 03-09-2010 04:52 PM

It is a relatively big job... 8-10hours if you have never done one before.

texans 03-09-2010 05:07 PM

Take a drive down to Abilene and I will do it for the right price. It's really not that hard I would say I can do it in 3-4 hrs. 5 tops.

Im in the same boat as you Powerstroke.I have been shopping the job in the New Orleans area to change the oil cooler and install my EGR delete kit and have gotten quotes that range from 540.00 to 1030.00.They are saying 10-13 hours.Im thinking I can do it myself.I swapped my turbo out myself and it doesnt look like the oil cooler and EGR coler are much deeper than the turbo.looks like its just the next layer of stuff to take off.

cheezit 03-09-2010 06:27 PM

They can be done in 3-5 hours if you have done a few. if you havent then it will take the better part of a day.

rickatic 03-09-2010 06:35 PM

If you get to the point of having the turbo removed you have it beat. The first time took about 8 hours, The third one took 5. It is just nuts and bolts. Take a picture of where the various types of manifold hold down bolts go. That saves time when reassembling.

Lol yall make it sound easy. I'm looking to go 3 layers deep though and do the oil cooler, fix the egr and head gaskets and studs. But I'm seriously debating finding someone else to do it.

cheezit 03-09-2010 07:47 PM

studs will take you a long time. just the cooler is not bad. Its easy for me as Its not my fisrt walk in the park. Lets just say I have a shirt from doing it.

Lubbockguy1979 03-09-2010 07:52 PM

Lol yeah having a few under your belt helps you get your mind organized.

texans 03-09-2010 08:20 PM

Now doing the studs and everything would take me a weekend. I don't have the experience like cheezit, but I did mine and helped a few friends do there's.

cheezit 03-09-2010 08:23 PM

heads take me an a day and a half. maybe 12 hours if I hustle. This is the one spot were being a little guy really hurts me. pulling the rachet on the last 90 just eats my lunch.

rickatic 03-09-2010 09:12 PM

Cheezit,

i can relate to your small guy comment even though I am not small. My nephew is 21 years old, 5'5" tall and 145 pounds. The little ******** is strong though.

Luubock...

Although Cheezit will laugh at me for saying this, I would seriously consider removing the front bumper and the coolers all the way back to the core support to do the "Big Three" you referenced. It is quite simple to pull that stuff off and it sure makes working over the top of the engine much easier. I do not know what the FMC 6.0 cylinder head lifting bracket costs to buy but if it was at all affordable I would get one. Getting the heads back in at the right angle and pitch is a nut buster without an engine hoist. It is also much easier to get the hoist in the right spot without thre front on. Good Luck

cheezit 03-09-2010 09:14 PM

lol I think the kid outways me by 10lbs and I have more then 15 years on him.

strokingbeast 03-09-2010 09:35 PM

have done two egr delete kits and with three people doing it took 10 hours, alot of time was drinking and running around getting parts, and food. As soon as my brothers truck gets out of the shop for the he is getting it done as well. Been waiting a year and half to do his

02GrayPowerStroke 03-10-2010 08:35 AM

Are there any good instructions on how to do it? What better blocking off the egr or an egr delete. Or is there any difference?
