63' Starter Help? (Advice needed at bottom)

Hey guys, I'm new to this site and would appreciate some help.

I bought a 63 Ford f110 2 weeks ago. The starter was spinning but not turning over the engine. We took it out and found out the Bendix was bad. So I took the Bendix out of a similar starter and it worked. Perfect fit. This afternoon I put the starter back in. When I tried to start it nothing happened. Checked the connection, battery was charged and had power, starter just didn't do anything. My dad arcd the Solenoid and it turned the engine over.

I haven't touched any wiring on the key, does anyone have any suggestions? I don't have the money right now for a manual. Does anyone have a wiring diagram???

There are plenty of wires under there and I cant make any sense of them. I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but it has a 400m out of a 77-79.

Thanks guys:-drink

Welcome to FTE

Look at the flywheel's (or flexplate if an A/T) ring gear, see if the teeth are stripped. This is a common problem.

If the starter drive lands on the spot where the teeth are stripped, the starter will spin, but...nothing will happen.

The ring gear can be replaced on a flywheel, as it was available separately. The ring gear was only furnished with the flexplate.

The same starter drive was used from 1965 thru the 1990's on just about everything (I-6's and V8's, cars/trucks), except on some 1968/78 passenger cars with 429/460's, and trucks w/diesel engines.

When you bought this truck...are you saying you never drove it, or heard the engine run...before you bought it?

If so...there could be myriad other reasons why the starter doesn't start the engine. The worst case scenario is: The engine is locked up. Bad news.

btw: There is no such thing as an F110. It's an F100. If the VIN begins with F10 = F100 2WD / If with F11 = F100 4WD.

The ring gear is fine. The starter just isnt working. When my dad shorted it it worked. Im thinking its a wireing problem between the key and the solenoid. I checked all the way around the ring gear and it was good.

is the starter spinning and not spinning the engine? or do you just turn the key and hear a clicking noise?

If the later, it could be your solenoid. Also check the charge on your battery.

And I meant to put f100. And its 4X4. We pull started it once, and it ran like a dream, and we got the starter to work once before it stripped all of the teeth off the starter. So the truck runs, There is a wiring problem

I turn the key, no click, no spin. Nothing. The starter worked before I took it out. The Teeth on the starter were ground off. It started once before it would just spin. I think something under the dash came unplugged

Did you test drive this truck, or hear the engine run before you bought it?

If not...there's all sorts of possible reasons why the starter doesn't work.

It may have nothng to do with the starter or the wriring...it could be a problem with the engine itself.

Started it and drove it. It was all good. Starter works, when we shorted the solenoid it turned over the engine. I need a wireing diagram from the key, to make sure everything is plugged in. Because the starter and engine worked before. I was working on the interrior and think I may have accidentally pulled a plug/connection loose. Thanks guys.

Look to the main harness plug at the firewall. They tend to rot off the leads to the main power and to the starter relay. Check contunity there and work your way backwards. There is not a lot of wires to trace. Black with yellow stripe is main powers to the ignition switch.

Found the problem!!!!

Ok, looked at the solenoid closer and found out that the mount broke! So there is no ground, which is why....when my dad shorted it out it worked. Must have happened when I pulled the starter out. A quick trip to the auto parts store tomorrow and she will be up and running!

Heres a few pictures for your enjoyment. :-jammin

i had a similar problem with my old 66 mustang

IsoGrifo 02-27-2010 01:00 AM

had a similar problem

ended up disconnecting the wire from the switch and replacing the whole wire to the solenoid. that was the whole problem.

Ahhhhh!!!

Alright, got it to start twice. Starter didn't sound good, but it worked. Drove it around for a little while and then parked it. Later on in the evening I went out and tried to start it again, with no luck. The starter is not working right!

I turn the key and it just spins. I rock the truck around to get it onto a different spot on the ring gear. It still just spins! Its not engaging at all. I put a BRAND new starter in today, and a new solenoid yesterday. Its like the Bendix is spinning, but not popping out to spin the ring gear. The starter I just put into it is one of the refurbished ones from autozone. The ring gear looked good when I had it open. I'm not sure, should I take the starter out and return it? I'm confused!

Any Ideas?
