whats the difference between d0ve and d3ve heads?

CC size, rocker design perhaps. Do you have the full number? Check it against this. No guarantee on this info, but it's a sticky at the top of the SBF forums.

is there any difference in port size between these heads or any other 460 heads?

the two biggset differences between the DoVe head and D3VE head is as follows

- DOVE heads (and the C8 and C9 head) had 77 cc chambers. the D3VE head has 95cc chambers. basically the same shape, just that the D3 are deeper.
- DOVE heads have screw in rocker studs c/w rail style rocker arms non-adjustable. the D3VE head has bolt down rocker arms pedastal style non adjustable

the valves are the same size (2.08" intake, 1.65" exhaust) and for all intent and purpose the ports are the same (slight difference due to larger chamber of D3 heads) the valve lenghts are different between the two.

the DOOE heads (the Cj/scj heads) had huge valves (2.25"/1.76") and intake and exhaust ports. way too large for a street engine unless max rpm is your goal. the D2OE police interceptor engines had 2.19 intakes and ports sized inbetween the cj heads and the D0/D3 heads. probably the best all around street heads if you can find them. the D2VE heads are good boat anchors so won't even mention them.

the main hp gain from changing the D3 heads to the early heads is in the compression bump. the ports basically flow the same.

Do DOVE heads have the smog bump in the ex. port ? I'ts been a while since I've seen one.

Yes they do. the later D0VE's also have the thermactor hole drilled in them just like the D3's do.

could you mill your mating surface to get the same compression as the earlier heads? Or would that be too much material, understandable aftermarket piston would probably be the most effective way to bump the compression back up. Maybe a combination of both?

This is an old thread but since you ask, no you couldn't mill that much off a D3 head. Keep in mind the D3 head was mated with pistons that had a huge dish where as the closed chamber head (as far as I've seen) had flat tops. Deck height is always a concern with factory or builder pistons, as Ford left them way down in the hole at tdc.

You would have close to 9.25-1 with flat top pistons and D3 heads. Maybe a little more depending on how much material you remove from the block and heads to straighten.

Keep in mind that the ports are different between the C9,C9,DO head vs the D3. On the D3 the chambers are deeper, the valves are shorter AND inside the ports the short sides are taller on both the intake and exhaust ports. This causes the ports to flow quite a bit less than a DOVE without the correct porting.
