6.0 PSD vs V10 towing
 

i just traded my 07 dually 6.0 psd for a 2010 V10. had to have the new one brought in from 1,000 miles away and im not at home now to take delivery yet. just curious if anyone has pulled the same loads with both engines and how you compare them. i tow a 40' travel trailer @ around 10,000 lbs. i know the v10 will do the job, just hope i wont be dissappointed.

You will be happy as we pull that kind of wt all the time with the new F150 5.4L and it does great job getting 13 mpg towing the 5th.

I believe the V10 will do a decent job on 10,000 lb. We tow 13,000 with ours with 4.30 axle ratio and it handles it real well. Diesel is probably a better choice, but a lot more money to buy and a lot more money to maintain and fix. The main thing I don't like is the Ford TorqShift automatic. It will shift into overdrive even when in the Tow/Haul mode. I never thought this was a good idea because you will get a lot of shifting with the torque converter clutch unlocking and locking and shifting into hi gear (1:1) on moderate hills. You see this on Diesels also if they have lower ratio axles, say 4.10 or 4.30. Ford won't fix this, believe me I've tried. If it bothers you, look into the SCT programmer model SF3 or X3. Their dealers can custom make a program that will change the transmission shift parameters and keep it in hi (1:1) while in tow/haul. We did this and it works good. I wish we had got the 6 speed manual trans. now but this is working OK.

It'll pull it fine, just don't be surprised how much more go-pedal you have to give it to have the pulling power that you're used to in the diesel. The V-10s make their peak torque at higher RPMs than the diesels.

my experience is I have both an 04 F350 FX4 and now a 2012 E450 with the v10. The truck and trailer both weigh approx 12000lbs. The e450 is a MH that weighs probably around 15K. With that said before we got the current rv, test drove a couple of PSD 6.0 that looked good, had good deltas and ran fairly well although both were dogs at accell!

The current rv very simular to the PSD is almost the same in accelleration and the engine is a real screamer, want to down shift and hold 4500-5000rpms to do anything requiring power. Now everyone say this is OK, but I dont care for all the noise issues associated with them. Got a rv programer from mike at 5star and it made a difference for a good part.

for my FWIT, I wish I could have found a 6.0 that had the COACH the wife wanted but the van version is a dog compared to the pu diesel

i have both in my driveway, 2 2006 one with 6.0 and other with v-10, the v-10 is next best to a 6.0 as far as towing and power, but be warned it will use alot more fuel about 4mpg worse! they are both great engines i like them both

Assuming your new truck has 4.10 or 4.30 gears I don't think you'll be disappointed, I have pulled considerably more weight than that with my 06 F350 V10 and have been impressed. The V10 will make power different vs the 6.0 and I look forwards to your comparisons of the trucks. Regardless of which you think is better.

I went from the V10 to a 07 6.0 towing about the same weight, just a shorter trailer. Granted, my V10 was up in the air with 37's, but I love towing with my diesel. The V10 got an average of 4-5 mpg's towing the same trailer that I get 10-11 with the diesel. The V10 is a great towing motor, just very thirsty. I do miss some of the things about the V10, most most definitely not the mileage.

i have both engines, the v-10 is a good engine and i would not trade it for anything,it does like fuel, it gets worse than my 94 f350 with dump body and 460, but i do not care it does well, the 6.0 i have gets really good fuel mpg

Be prepared to run up to 4000 RPM. I do it almost every trip with the v10 and 4.30 ratio.
