home made gooseneck hitch....

i have a buddy that has a 1987 f250 4x4 6.9 diesel 4spd ext cab long bed he is wanting me to build a gooseneck hitch/plate for his truck and was wanting to get some ideas as well measurements and what materials to make one..any and all info is much appreiciated!

Hitch goes 4-6" forward of the rear axle in the center of the bed...

30,000# is a good rating to shoot for... which means up to 6,000# of tounge weight.

You probably should run 8" w x 3/8" thick C-channel from frame rail to frame rail for the ball mount. (3) 9/16" grade 8 bolts each side should be good enough to hold it. You could go to 3/4", but, drill bits are expensive and probably takes too much of the frame flange. I would back the underside of the frame with a 1/4" plate

Just a word of caution, if something happens to your buddy or he sells the truck and something happens to the new owner you could find yourself in some hot water. Personal liability lawyers love to sue the pants off of people for this kind of stuff.

i accually never thought of that side of it Cowboy65...thanks for bringin it up....i will deffinatly keep that inmind...but dont think ill have to worry about the hitch anytime soon hes had the truck for a week and it already took a dump on him with no real resolution to the problem....thats the worst part about buyin a "used" diesel you dont know what you might run into....so thats were we are now.....thanks for all the info though!
