Holley Carb Identification Needed (and questions)

I have someone who is willing to negotiate a trade with me on this carb - It's been sitting in his shed for a few years and he told me he pulled it from an aluminum recycling pile. He knows nothing about this carb and has never taken it apart - I would like to know whether or not it's salvageable...

I know nothing about Holleys, I've always had Carters, Rochesters, and an Edelbrock...

It has a tag on it with the following:
Motorcraft
D2HF DA
B 6L17

There's a number on top, by one of the float bowls:
5730
63391

The numbers on the air horn are:
D2HF-9510-DA
LIST-6339-1
3226

I tried Googling the information, but I'm not coming up with anything other than it's of 1972 vintage and they were used on 390's... I'm hoping some Holley guru on here can tell me what this is...

In this picture, there are 2 ports that have nothing in them - I'm guessing one of them should have a metering screw but I'm not sure about the other one.

In this picture, what are these things I've got marked? I'm guessing they're vents?

A couple more pics:

http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/100_0058.jpg

In this picture, you can see that one of the booster venturi's is half-missing - I can't tell what happened to it - Are these replaceable?
http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/100_0060.jpg

If that booster venturi can't be repaired, I'm not going to bother with this thing...

So, what do y'all think? Is this thing salvageable or not? What is it?

Ok, I'll start with the top and work down, numbers will refer to the picture.
Part numbers D2HF-9510-DA is the Ford PN for the carb, List-6339-1 is Holley's number. It is for a large truck with a distributor and possibly transmission output (driveshaft) governor.

1 - the front port is probably a dummy, particularly if it isn't threaded, rear is probably idle mixture unless the idle mixture is underneath like the last of the carbureted 460s.

2 - left side is vacuum advance, right is fresh air for the governor valve.

3 - governor diaphram on right, secondary throttle on left.

4 - Back side, has wrong needle and seat, can strip bowl easily

5 - Probably backfired and caught fire. Not easily replacable unless you have another carburetor for parts.

Final answer, unless someone really badly needs one of these, scrap it.

OK, that answers my questions... Thanks!

I did some digging and figured out this is a Holley 4150... I was wondering what that thing is where the choke would normally be, but you answered that with the governor comments...

It probably isn't worth saving it is not a performance carb and it will take a lot of tuning to get it running good on a regular truck. Working around the governor might be tricky and it also wont have automatic kick down capablities if you are running an auto. By the time you buy all the small parts it might be cheaper to just go buy a new 600 they aren't that expensive.

Heh, I'll just stick with the 2 barrel I have now as there's nothing wrong with it...

Just out of curiosity though, what does the governor do?

85lebaront2 01-29-2010 04:31 PM

The governor limits engine rpm, but school bus chassis have a driveline governor in series that limits the top speed. On that system, there is a centrifugal bleed valve in the distributor that closes at the max rpm allowed. The front diaphram is fed vacuum from 2 internal ports, one is venturii, the other from below the throttle plates. Later versions of these are now electronic contrlled by the ECM.

d2hf-3910-da carburetor

I have this carburetor also and am changing out to a new Holley (4510, I think it is?). Anyway the old carb.has 3 vacuum lines (one to vacuum advance on distributor, one to side of distributor, and a steel line threaded at the carb.going to the side of the distributor, threaded there also.) Any ideas what they are for? Can I plug some of them? The new carb. has 1 vacuum port.

85lebaront2 09-04-2012 06:42 PM

What engine is it on? It sounds like you have a governor equipt engine, the steel line is probably the governor line.

earl6969 09-05-2012 02:19 AM

391 its a 1972 F700 fire truck.

85lebaront2 09-05-2012 07:58 AM

That is definitely a governor equipt carburetor. 391 is a heavy duty version of a 390, steel crank, may have different heads and manifolds even.

earl6969 09-05-2012 03:32 PM

The 4150 seems to be working fine with 2 of the lines disconnected from the distributor. Vacuum advance is connected though.

85lebaront2 09-06-2012 05:43 PM

It'll be ok as long as no one over revs it.

earl6969 09-07-2012 05:19 PM

After throwing $500 in parts on it, it runs worse than ever. New carb. fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil. I believe now it is in that crappy governed distributor. (I am familiar that a 390 distributor may fit with an added bushing). Anybody know what part number would replace the governed distributor with a regular one?
