03 f-150 4.2 fuel milage????

hello i'm new to the 97-03 f-150's. i've got a shortbed auto with the 4.2 and i'm getting 16-17 mpg in town and 18-and maybe 19 with a strong tail wind. is this about right for stock setup?? anything i can do to improve mpg's. thanks guys

That seems about right. One thing you can do to get better mileage would be to only drive downhill :). I usually get about 17-18 with mine (4.2, stick, longbed). I think the only place you save much money is at the dealership when you buy.

Tweak it a little. Add a K&N, polish up the inner manifold surfaces, tighten everything up and keep the crankase clean and the oil cool with a oil cooler and you can get 23mpg highway. I always run every other tank with a couple quarts of 2cycle oil too but I dont know if that helps or not. I tow allot with that truck thats why.
