fuel economy

I recently purchased a 73 ford f900 dump truck with a 477 , with a 5 speed and 2 speed rearend. top speed is around 50-55 at 3500 rpm. I will be towing a 16,000 lb backhoe. what kind of gas mileage should I expect?

2 to 5 mpg.

that's what I figured. actually, if I can get a consistent 3 mpg, I will be fine with that. I won't use this rig very much, and with fuel prices hovering around 3 dollars a gallon, it will cost me a dollar a mile. here in california, they are going to start smogging diesel trucks, which makes this gas truck a pretty good deal for me.

well,I fixed my speedometer, and the speed at 2500 rpm is 50 mph. I am going to rig up a 1 gallon fuel tank, and see how far 1 gallon will take me. still working on my trailer, so it will be a while before I get around to checking mileage
