93 f150 4x4 brake rotor-hub dissasembly
 

hi got a 93 f150 and i currently have manual locking hubs but i got the papers from the dealership saying i had auto-locking hubs. i have to remove the rotors right now im taking th hub assembly apart. and my friend gave me the tool that you need for the nut(his has 4 points on it that is for a 1/2 ton but it wouldnt fit on mine. so i got a spindle nut rental kit from Advance auto and mine is the 6 point socket which is for 3/4 ton(dont know why)). i have the outside c-clip removed and the c-clip around the spindle but thier is something like a washer thing around the spindle behid the c-clip.

now is thier a difference between the auto and manual hub switch that i should know about when taking it off? i helped my friend take his off his truck before and didnt have this much trouble.

is my next step
-removing the nut? or do i have to take that washer type seal off?

Remove the snap ring on the axle and any washers behind it then put two screws back into the hub body opposite each other and pull.

Nope that's the lockout, the wheel bearing nuts are behind it,

After the hub body is out, use the sockets to pull off the first nut, then remove the washer that is sandwiched in between then remove the second nut. Use a breaker bar to remove at least the first one. The second one will come off fairly easily. After that, just grab the hub and slide it off. Be ready to catch the wheel bearing that will try to jump out of the front where the hub body slid out. The bearing in the back is held in by a seal.

There are two snap rings holding the hub in place. One rides on the end of the axle shaft (it looks like you got that one off) and the other you can barely see. It's just inside the lip of the hub. If you stick a small screwdriver between the lockout and the hub housing, you will feel the snap ring about 1/8" inside. If you run the screwdriver all the way around you will eventually find the break in the snap ring. I use the tip of a knife and a very small allen wrench to get it out. It takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it it's easy.

You use the spindle socket after you get the lockout out. You don't need the 6-prong one, your truck uses the 4-prong one.

yep got that one on the hub housing. i remembered that one when i helped my friend do his truck. now its just that the hub assembly doens want to budge.

If you got both snap rings then just thread a couple of the cover screws back into the hub and it should pull out.

well its not cracked its just one piece cause it is a WARN after market.
i didnt even use the torch so yeah just had it just incase :P

Glad you got it out. It's not supposed to get rusty in there. :)

yeah i know the o-ring on the locker went bad. got one coming in tomorrow to see if it fits. now when i put the nuts back on over the bearing what do i tighten them down to?

I just want to say thanks for the help myself. I've owned several 4x4s and 2wds but generaly on the 4x4s didn't get to keep them before going into the extents of this. I have a 95 f150 4x4 and wheel bearings are going on it. Instead of the seal going bad I have missing screws. This is my first time breaking into the hud and locker on a 4x4 and this has been the most insightful forum I've found. So thanks again
