GM NV 4500 trans behind a 390.

I have done a lot of searching but all the info I find is people putting the 5 speed transmissions behind 460, 351m, and 400.

The Truck Info: 74 F250 4x4 390FE, NP435 4spd, NP 205 Transfer case.

I can get a GM NV 4500 5spd for free, so my question is... Has any one put a 5spd trans behind a 390 or is everyone converting to 460? I think my 390 has more power than a 460 and would just like to put a 5 spd behind it. any help is greatly appreciated.

Check with advance adapters

I couldn't even find a conversion kit for a big block ford at all on advance adaptors.

Price? LOL :)
I found two so far, one was $825 and the other $850! :/

A guy could buy a parts truck with a 460 and ZF for that kind of money.
BTDT and it was $500 as a matter of fact and had a 10.25" LSD too. ;)

Advance adapters does sell one that should work- there's an article about the swap on a 390 on htis site. they list it as being for a sbf. But if you use it with a 390 bell housing, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've never done the swap, so that's all I know. I think they specifiy that the trans be from a gas powered dodge- prolly has something to do with input shaft length and spline count. They also make an adapter to put a ford type np205 behind the nv4500.

Advance adapters is the place to go. When I went to SEMA a couple years ago I talked to them about this, they said the dodge gas powered is the tranny to get. The books they gave me on this said that the gm can be usable but the input shaft has to be convereted to dodge. Its the length and spline count that matter. There is a guy on here that has done it and its a clean swap, think he is in the bumpside furom tho, 71 highboy if i remember correctly.

There is a guy in the bumpside section who did this but it wasn't a 4x4. Here is a link to how he did it:

Yes it has to do with input and output shaft. The NV4500HD from a dodge diesel has a bigger output shaft. The GM nv4500 is the same as the dodge gas trans. I went thru this finding parts for my NV4500HD that is in a Dodge Ram diesel I used to own.
