4.0L what years inter change?

Girlfriend has a 2001 Explorer sport, with 4.0 motor. The timing chain broke and went thru the valve cover. What all year 4.0's will work in this year? I have a friend that has a good motor out of a '92, will this motor work in an '01?

The "92" 4.0 is a push rod motor. The "2001" 4.0 is overhead cam, so no it won't work. Need to stay with "2000" or newer. I think it was "03" or after, that the chain problems were not an issue.

I am not sure about the last post. Check to make sure they are the same as OHV, or SOHV, other wise I think they will, ford put in both. Look and the front of the motor they are obviously not the same.

If the cam chain went through the valve cover it is definately a SOHC engine and the latest year SOHC engine you can find will probably be the best.

Thanks for the reply's, I found one out of an 01 with 70,000 miles, for $600.00. I calling this morning, about one out of an 03 ranger 4x4, with 30,000 miles.

The "03" motor should be better especially since it has less miles. I hope you can get it for a good price. Good luck!
