Need help find this poser who claim 20-22 mpg out bronco
 
I lost bookmark ot thread.

I could remember it was
Bronco with 5.0L with AOD. Poster claim it have mod exhaust and all emission stuff off 5.0L. He say if you drive like baby you get 22 mpg. It have EFI.


I want know how can I get away emission and have 5.0L run good plus get 15 or higher mpg.

When I remove engine from bronco I never knew how badly emission is there. It garbage to me. Tons of vacuum hoses to those emission and EGR.

Just because someone posted it doesn't mean it's true.I call BS on getting 20-22 mpg.Also it's illegal to remove emission equipment.

I'm not the guy you're looking for BUT according to the ScanGauge2 I get about 20-22 in my 96 w/351. Of course I'd have to drive a continuous 40MPH and never use the brakes or drive up an incline for the entire tank to have that last very long. :D

I have a 91 5.0 and when i got it about 7 years ago it got 12-13 mpg. I went on a mission to get better mpg.I did a complete tune up ,including advancing the timeing in small increments till I got it to rattle(labor knock,detonation ) then back off the timing till it went away ,did this with the gas that I was going to run . Changed the muffler to a free flowing one. Got it to 15 mpg. The next thing I did was to lose the mechanical fan and replace it with a Taurus electric fan and the mpg went to 17. that was two years ago and now it averages 16. I have read here on the web and many comments from friends that the 5.0 in these trucks have no power. Well I don't know about that but I ran it at the local mud bogg on their fast track (200 ft of red dirt graded smooth) with plane old street tires and a open diff in two wheel drive and it turned 5.03 which I did not think was two bad for a street driven truck that weigh's 6,000 pounds. :-D

This is a cut and paste from a previous post that I made (fingers not working too good this morning ) but it is what I did to get better gas mpg.

I can't believe that one on a truck, as the highest mpg I ever got on a 5.0L engine was in a 91 t-bird cruising at 75+ and a new reman AOD at 88K miles. Amazingly it achieved 30 mpg, but usually averaged 24-26 in that car. A truck just doesn't have the aero that the bird did even though it is only 1000+ lbs heavier than that car. Maybe it was km per gallon which would be closer to the 20 mark than miles...

The best I ever got with mine as a gasser was 16 combined, luckey to get 14 if pulling. Now that it is a diesel 16 is my lowest (cold weather, 15 minute warm ups twice a day or pulling a load) and 17-18 best. After I turbo it and get the zf5 in it I hope for about 21 not pulling anything. I now it is not a gasser any more and is like comparing apples to oranges but it is just one more advantage of going diesel lol.

I am sure it real.

I get 16.5 mpg out 96 E350 passenger van with 351W plus 3.55 in axle. Van is almost 4 1/2 tons weigh. Could got 18 mpg if I control myself not to hurried in rural area.

Have 12 peoples ride that time.

It about is your FOOT how you push gas. Before that I could gotten 13 mpg.


I will let you know in May when we get Bronco on 500 miles round trip. If it reach 20 mpg I be cry.

For Emission everything on bronco is rot. EGR's hose is gone it have holes.

Too tons miss parts so I knew it not worth to put emission on new engine I have now. Plus Michigan don't have emission test so we be fine.

It's a bit high, but it's not unbelievable. When my Bronco was newer I could get close to 19 on a flat freeway at around 55 - 60 with a 351W and E4OD in a '95.

Lately either mixed, or hilly freeways, so highway mpg is now 16 - 17, although the drivetrain has over 100k more miles.

I get about 8-10mpg(79 Bronco with 400), 16mpg(79 F150, long wheel base with 302, bored thirty over, 268 comp cam, edelbrock intake/carb), 18-20mpg(73 F100, shortwheel base, with 302, completely stock).

13.99 with my 1990 5.0L AOD. That's with a fresh tune-up, and pretty much stock set-up. I haven't checked since I replaced the fuel pump but I don't think it's changed much from that improvement.

My (ex)wife's 96 5.8L averaged 12-13 mpg, my '83 with a modified 4v 302 averaged 8-10 mpg. When I put a 5-speed and a 300 in the '83 Bronco, I was averaging a little over 20 mpg, commuting back and forth to work, 60 miles a day. I kept my speed down to 40-45 mph most of the time, and that was the key to the high mileage. The 300 makes almost 300 ft/lbs of torque at 1600 rpm, so I was able to keep the truck in 5th gear almost the whole time, even on hills. I wish there was a strong aftermarket for the 300 inline 6s, because I would love to build one with a stroker crank, long rods, deck plate, roller lifters, etc, and see the phenomenal torque and mileage that would be possible.
I don't think any V8 could touch the 300 in terms of low end torque and fuel mileage.

On a related note; Tuning is *critical* to a motor's performance and mileage. 99% of factory vehicles are "within specs", but that rare 1% of factory vehicles just happen to be tuned "right on the money". Those are what some people refer to as Wednesday Built Vehicles. They just run better, make more power and get better mileage than average. I've actually worked on such vehicles before. One was an early 90s 302 F150 with over 100k miles on it. The thing had *serious* power, it accelerated faster than any factory 302 or 351W I've ever driven, and it was BONE STOCK. It left probably 75 feet of rubber on the peg leg when you hit it.. ridiculous! Another 302 that had way more power than a stock 302 had any right to have, was my buddy's mother's Lincoln with 150k+ miles on it. Everything just happened to be exactly right; cam specs, cam timing, pushrod length, bearing clearances, crank and bore straightness, ignition and fuel curves, etc. If everything is perfect, you end up with a badass ride.

Isn't that due oversize tire on bronco? I like 235/75/15 it look nice compare to oversize 31x10.50x15 it look bad to me but not to you.

Well If I got 20 mpg I let you know. Need firgure why Bronco weigh more than F150. Where extra weigh?

I remember a 4x4 rag that featured an early 80's bronco that got consistant 13 to 14 mpg after the guy had his automotive class perform a full tune up on the truck.
