Need intake system opinions!
I have a '90 302 in my 86 f150. they are completely different set up for the intake, on the 86 the air box rests on the motor.. on the 90 its right behind the washer fluid box. what can i do for a high performance intake? people have said the cones are pointless cause it just sucks in hot air from the engine bay, so any help would be appreciated!

Put the '90 airbox and intake tubes on it and go get a a snorkle from an I6 truck.. that's the piece that goes from the rad support to the bottom of the airbox and it's a much better design on the I6 and 460 trucks. That setup with any drop-in filter will support 300+hp and you got some work to do to get that truck motor up there.

Yeah, i got headers on it with straight pipe then glasspacks... so I really do need good air intake, and i plan on getting a super chip!

Give the chip a pass.. it's not buying you anything you can't get for free. Get a timing light and advance the distributor until the engine pings under load and then back it off a degree or two.

what do you mean pings under load?

Conanski 12-03-2009 12:45 PM

Pinging is pre-ignition of the A/F mixture that sorta sounds like a ping or rattle in the engine when it is under load.. trying to accelerate or climb a grade without downshifting at highway speeds for example. This should not happen normally and can be brought on by advancing the ignition too far or by a dirty injector that causes a cylinder to be leaner than the rest or even a buildup of carbon on top of the pistons.

Youll be able to hear the ping believe me.

I second what Conanski said. Just fit the 90 air box on your truck and get the I6/460 lower intake tube. Also, the chip is a waste of money.

The pinging almost sounds like a hissing sound.

what do you mean the lower tube from the inline... like the tube from the '90 box to the headlight or down below?

TexasGuy001 12-04-2009 05:53 PM

Yeah, thats the one. The other trucks have one that goes up on top of the radiator. The lower one like we are talking about is the better one.
