Early Job 1 transmission question
I have an early Job 1 (04/07) 08 6.4L CC with a 5R110 that has the remote mounted external filter. I know I need to change the fluid sooner with this type of filter, but do I also have an internal sump filter? I dont want to pull the pan unless I need to replace an internal filter, and believe it or not the factory Service Manual is not exactly clear on whether the early tranny's with the remote external filter include an internal sump filter. Does anyone know? Thanks

they did both of mine when i took it to ford for it's tranny flush

I'm also a 4/07 with the external. Just had a flush done and external swapped. Not the internal, which as Crazy001 said, is just a screen.
For reference though, the screen's part number is FT144. |
Thanks guys, and thanks Tom. I can always count on you.

Thanks for the info as well guys. I have an early 08 as well (01/07) and it needs the trans service.
I noticed the drain plug on the pan. Is there a plug on the converter? If there is I'll do the service myself. If not I'll let the dealer do it. What has the dealer charged you guys to do it? |
no drain on the TQ. You have to get it warm and then a thermostat lets the fluid flow.

Thanks. Sounds like a dealer trip while I'm at the office one day.

Just had the dealer do my tranny, an 05 but same as yours, $133.00 + tx. minus the ext. filter. did that myself after flush. FT-145 filter at dealer $44.71 on line at kmansparts - $20.99. Got two filters for the price of one and it takes about 10 minutes to change. That includes cleaning the filter housing and opening the 1st beer.

The 08'-up trucks that do have an external (not all do, check your bellhousing to verify yours is set up this way) have a different "external" filter than the previous model year trucks. This one is Motorcraft part number FT176 (Ford Part Number = 7C3Z-7B155-B) and retails significantly higher than the older style.

I realized that they changed the internal filter and pan but didn't realize that the ext. filter was also changed?

Wow, big diff. Does the whole housing get changed or just the guts? What do they cost and do both or just one of the lines go thru it?
