Black smut in exhaust

Why do I get black smut out of my drivers side exhaust pipe? I started the truck up while it was backed into the carport this morning and now I have a black spot on my wall. Went to lunch a while ago and left a black spot on a co-workers car. It's been doing this since I've had it. There's usually some moisture in the exhaust pipe due to the way it's installed.
Could this be an engine problem or something in the pipe? This is also the same side that will backfire a bit.

ossible valve seal leak. slowly dripping in to the cylinder after
it is turned off. Then poof out it goes when starting it up.

Could also be from running to rich.

I second the running rich, unless you have an engine like mine....

Stuck choke?? If you have an automatic choke that's the first place I'd look.

I'm pretty sure mines running rich but it does blue smoke...not black. Blue means burning oil right? Probably from the 5w20 that's in it... :(

Yeah, I had that problem when I was running my first 390 in my truck. The garage floor under the tail pipes had two black drip spots from dirty black moisture on a cold start. I once backed my truck up to a yellow steel / concrete safety post at work and when I started it the yellow post had a large black splat about 5'' diameter and several runs down the post. I don't think that engine was running right. I had oil leaking into the coolant, but not coolant in the oil. And who knows where else it was going. I pulled that engine and built another 390 which is running good and clean now. Oh...and as far as that yellow post goes...I just checked it today and it still has the black splat stain on it from two years ago...lol
