Buddy list??

Just wondering what the purpose of adding someone to your "buddy list" does ? Does this automatically tie in to aol or anther service?
Or is there some kind of messenger service offered here?

Reason I ask is, I recieved a e-mail saying that I was added to someones buddy list.
