That is normal for the X framed GM's of that period and the reason they got away from that frame style.

Absolutely correct. The perimeter frame was touted as a tremendous safety advance when introduced. As for X-frames, two friends of mine were permanently disabled (one almost killed) when an X-frame Chevy they were passengers in went up against a telephone pole. The pole just sliced through the body, right along the edge of the frame.
