ford 302 cam????
ok i got a 1991 ford f150 302 4x4 used to play in the mud and haul a mud truck from time to time.. i just got the block back from the shop and i wanted to put a cam in it.. i was told to get what is called the RV cam. but i want something that will help me out with the hauling and playing but yet still be where can u hear it when idle. with stock heads if that is possible.
|
In a nutshell. The RV cam puts your power band lower in rpm range, perfect for your hauling/towing. To get the lopy idle you want to hear, it moves power band up in rpm range, high end HP, opposite of what you need.

so would one with a 218 int./ 228 exh. with a .471 lift work with all the stock stuff??
|
I'll let someone else guide you on this. Depends a lot on what engine/heads you have. 91 is a 5.0 roller. If your engine is a earlier flat tappet ( 85 back) makes a big diff. That info will help with the answers. I work only with the older stuff.

what does LSA mean i am sorry i am new to all this stuff to do with the cams. and yes it is stock EFI.. ok im looking at the summit cams. and they got one with 204 int/ 214 exh and a lift of .448 int and .472 would that be a better choice once again i am sorry for not knowing anything but thanks for the help so far

LSA is lobe seperation angle. If you select that on the Summit web page there's probably only 1 cam that will come up for the 5.0, the Comp 31-255-5.
|
so that cam would work for me?? and what kind of lifters would i need and could i use the stock push rods??
|
Get a kit with matching lifters and of course a gasket kit since you have to strip the motor down to the bare longblock.. intake, water pump and timing cover all have to come off.

OK- I think there might be some confusion here, so let's make sure we're all clear.
When Jays Ranger said he was looking at Summit cams, I think he meant this one:Summit SUM-3600 - Summit Racing® Camshafts - Overview - SummitRacing.com. It's a flat tappet cam with 112 LSA. Paul is talking about this cam:COMP Cams 31-255-5 - COMP Cams Computer-Controlled Camshafts - Overview - SummitRacing.com. So when JR said "so that cam would work for me", it needs to be clear that he means the Comp and not the Summit. JR: If you will look at the link to the Comp Cam you will notice it says "computer compatible", this is what the LSA is all about. The computer needs 114 LSA, it probably won't like that Summit cam very much. |
I would like to add
Choosing a cam is more complex then, simply more power, lopey idle. What works for one may not for another... That being said, There are many factors in the proper cam specs. such as... Gear ratio... TQConverter stall...and compression ratio...vehicle weight...ect... These are the questions asked, if you called comps tech line. That being said..."call Comps tech line." I went over this with a guy not to long ago. He put all this money into his F150 engine (351) oh it sounded good, but was a slug. I drove it... IT came alive at about 2000 rpms. Simply put, he was mis matched, he had to pull out his converter, I gave it to a friend and he set it up for a 2000 stall. Now it was better. I can keep going with stories like that. Take the time the first time, or make the time the second... |
ok well i am working with just the block now put the crank in today.. just slowly building it. and yea i am talking about the comp cam.. sorry i did not state which one.. and ill look at the kits and see what they offer.

About the Comp 31-255-5. How much horsepower and torque gains are we talking about?
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift 206 Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift 212 Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.462 in. Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.474 in. I know that's the biggest that people say you can use with the stock SD system... but what kind of power gains do you get with that from the stock 185/270 hp/tq rating, and about where in the RPM do they come in? |
