Whats wrong? Hows your flathead goin?

fixnair 09-24-2009 09:04 AM

Been very slow to materialize. The machine shop still has it and they are treating it as "makeup work". They have been very busy ans have not had time to get to it. I am kinda cash strapped too right now so I haven't been pressing them.

What have you got going for you?

jmadsen 09-24-2009 04:59 PM

I have had my 8RT in the machine shop since spring and I still dont have one back yet!
getting close to being ready to bolt the engine up in my 51 F-1.

Also just got two new parts trucks 48 F-1 and 52 F2 complete with V8's one looks rebuilt. using the cab off the 52 to swap onto my F-6 ( more I think about it though I'm not sure why?) the F-2 is probably in better overall shape... I should just make it (F-2) project #3 instead :)

hmmm ??

Na bugger all just fixed an exhaust leak on my 47 and door hinges and new deck on the 40 Money a bit tight over here but i chip away no rush

fixnair 09-25-2009 04:02 PM

I talked to the machine shop today snd they said it would be ready tuesday or wenesday of next week. I am anxious to get started assembling the engine.

I know what you mean about money being tight. I think it is tight all over the world. I am only working about half speed and until the price of oil goes up again I don't see a bright future for my work. M akes it tough to get things done that require money.

Congrats on your first Flatty!! Lots of good books out there. I think any book you get your hands on will be awesome. I own "Rebuilding the Famous Ford Flathead" by Ron Bishop and "How to Build a Flathead Ford V-8" by Motorbooks Workshop. Also order a Flathead Jacks catalog (they charge $10 but totally worth it), H&H Flatheads catalog, Speedway catalog, and Red's Headders + Speed equipment catalog.

Flathead is still sitting on the garage floor where it has been since spring. Work on the frame and suspension has been slower than anticipated so I haven't really gotten in a hurry getting the flathead done. I need to pick up the pace on the entire project. Time has been more of issue than money but I have bascially burned thru my budget so now I am strapped for both.

Well both my parts trucks v8's from Sept have cracks, one is in the valve galley fixable to someone who knows how, the other one has 2 cylinder to valve pocket cracks. So thats a total of 4 cracked blocks I'm sitting on now.
can't complain though since I have 6 others that were good, 3 runners (sold 1) and 3 good rebuildable blocks, one of which I'm having rebuilt for my 51 F-1

I still need to pull the head on the one in my 52 F-6 to free up a stuck intake valve. debating to just pull the whole engine and fix it in the garage were it's warmer...... maybe replace that engine with a different one??? at this point I might as well since I'll eventually be swapping the cab out so why not pull the engine if the cab and front clip is coming off anyway's:-tap
oh well! anyway... ---- anyone out there listening :)

Cheers
Josh

yep were listening . check that stuck valve good . when i got my 53 it had a miss and when i pulled the heads { still remember the confused looks on the son in laws face as he helped / got a look at a flatty LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! } found an intake valve that i thought was stuck . well it was bent . the engine was frozen up and when it got free'd up and we thought all was hunky dory nope ! bent a valve as it was frozen in the guide .now the same one , new valve guide , valve , etc. is the culprit for my i cant figure it out , infamous knock . the dain valve springs have given way in her and allowed the stuff to move up and down in one piece just before parking it . no damage other than a i shoulda replaced the d--n springs while it was apart the first time self butt kicking .......................:-banghead

Still messing with adding front disk brakes to my rebuild but as soon as that is done I should be able to turn my attention to the flathead. Hard to believe it's almost been a year since I bought it. Where does the time go? Keep checking back as I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions once i get to that stage.
