1977 F-600 questions

First i'd like to say thanks in advance for the much needed info. i have a 1977 ford F-600 dump truck that needs a little tlc. it has a 330 industrial engine, 4-speed manual trans,2-speed rear axle. im rebuilding the 330 engine and have a few questions. does anyone know where i could get a service manual? i need engine specs. bolt torque , bore diameter and such. also this engine has a governor thats under the 2-barrel carb. i dont like it or the 200 lb. cast steel intake manifold. i would like to replace it with a aluminum 4-barrel intake and run a holley 600cfm carb. does anyone know if they make a performance intake for this engine. i looked around a little but only found stuff for FE motors. dont take it the wrong way. im not trying to build a hot rod ford dump truck. lol.. i just dont like the idea of the engine governor.

Why? On a heavy truck a governor will start feeding fuel faster than you can react to a slowing engine.

If you have the 330 MD or 330 HD, whch I assume you do, that is an FT engine. To my knowledge, there are no aftermarket manifolds available for them. Your best bet is to find a 391 with a stock 4BBL manifold.

Don't lose the governor. The only reason it would ever kick in is if you rev it too much...and seeing as it is probably governed at around 3800, unless you are racing it you shouldn't have to run it that hard.

Try this thread...it may answer a couple questions for you.

Industrial doesn't mean indestructible.

Welcome to FTE

Original used factory shop manuals: faxonautolit.com.

The manuals were all printed by Helm Inc. originally, but they have none available for F500 or larger trucks, as I just looked at their website.

Post the first 4 digits of your VIN. I want to see what 330 engine your truck has, as there were several different versions used 1973/78.

The 330/361/391 engines used 1964/78 are FT engines, not industrial engines per se, though some were used as such. One of these engines is FE based.

1964/78 391's are all 4V's, but the intake manifold is another cast iron monster.

thanks for the info bowtie_schmowtie. i will read those threads. thats a good point on the governor. i would never turn more that 3500 rpms in this truck anyway.

number dummy, the vin on the truck is F61DVY40884. the model number is F611D.

i had recently bought a 390 motor from a local junk yard to put in the truck. the guy swares that it will fit. i almost started to drop it in but after reading alot about FT and FE motors on here and the net i decided not to go that route. i could see that the timing covers would have to be swapped to be able to attach the front mount. i read that the balancer shaft o.d was larger on the FT motor. i saw the differances in the exhaust manifold dump locations. the only thing that i was unsure about was if the 330 intake manifold would work on the 390 FE. i had read the intake ports in the heads on the 390 fe motor were larger than the 330 ft heads. i had to use the 330 intake if i was going to use the 330 ft timing cover because of the water pump. i couldnt blow the 390 fe apart to try the fitment of the intake manifold because the junk yard would have never let me return the motor after i had basically torn the motor apart. it was a sad day when i returned it. i had paid 200 bucks for the engine and i heard it run.

As you have found, FT and FE intakes are not interchangeable.

FT motors also have larger crank snouts.

But, I don't see why you couldn't use that 390 in the truck. In fact, if it has the same bellhousing pattern as the 330, I would jump Oo. at that.

Parts will be much easier to find for the 390...that's the biggest thing in my book. I say go and get that 390 back while you still can. 200 bucks is a steal of a deal for a good running FE!!!

GO FOR IT! GO FOR IT! GO FOR IT!

This only applies to the 330 Heavy Duty engine used 1964/72 and the 361 & 391 engines used 1964/78.

Originally (1964/72) there were four FT engines: 330 2V Medium Duty, 330 2V Heavy Duty, 361 2V and 391 4V.

The 330 Medium Duty is FE based, the 330 Heavy Duty used 1964/72 is based on the 361/391.

The 330 Medium Duty used 1965/67 used the FE 352 crank (C4AZ6303L), this same engine used 1968/73 used the the 1968/72 FE 360 crank (C8TZ6303A).

And...the so called 330 Heavy Duty engine used 1974/78 used the 1973/76 FE 360 crank (D3TZ6303B).

:confused: Ford confusion: Ford dropped the 330 Heavy Duty engine in 1972, then...called the former 330 Medium Duty the 330 Heavy Duty!

Bottom Line: The 330 Heavy Duty engine used 1973/78 is nothing more than the former 330 Medium Duty engine used 1964/72.

The OP's VIN: F61DVY40884

F61 = F600 2WD

D = 330 Heavy Duty (formerly the 1964/72 330 Medium Duty)

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant

Y40884 = 1977

MODEL Code: F611 = F600 2WD, 20,200 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

F611D = No such thing, the D is part of the following BODY code.

Thanks for the clarification, ND. Just for future reference, did the 330 use the standard FE block and crank, or did it use a heavier webbed block and just the smallest FE crank?

The 1964/72 330 M/D (same as the 1973/78 330 Heavy Duty) used the FT block with the apropos FE crank.

Question to ya ND, what crank did the 330 heavy duty '64-'72 use and can a fella drop in a 361-391 to "stroke" it... I have heard that the compression is below 8 to 1 (hard to believe with the power I have) but it would be appealing to bring that ratio up a little.
