What's normal boost just cruising?
 

Having my gauges put in tomorrow, and when I get the truck back, I'm just wondering what's normal boost range for just driving down the hiway, not under load or pulling anything? Thanks for any input. Got an e99 motor with stock turbo and injectors, AIS intake and new 4" turbo back exhaust.

With my stock turbo I'd see 5-10 pounds, but I usually drive the truck pretty hard.

Depends, I see anywhere from 0-4 psi @ 60-65mph on flat ground.

About anywhere from 3 to 6 psi just cruising at about 70. Think of it as a fuel demand/consumption meter too. There will be a load at highway speed simply from rolling and wind resistance. 3 is about right for level and up to 6 on a grade. It will drop to zero going down hill.

You are not going to drive down the interstate at speed with zero boost unless you let up or are going downhill.

That's driving to and from work for about 20 miles. No interstate. There's a few stops and several curves. I don't run a constant speed, but I can hold a steady speed without raising the needle.

Thanks guys...great answers that really help. Now I know what to look for. Glad I asked, cause if I was seeing just 4 or 5 psi when cruisin' I would have thought it was low out of ignorance...but now I know better. Never had a diesel before!! All new to me.

Sounds about right then Roland. It can get down close to zero at times just cruising, but anytime you try to change what is happening it will build some boost, then drop off.

I only see 0 - 3 psi as well.

With the 4:10's you will be slightly higher also.( SLIGHTLY) on the high way.

At what cruising speed?

On I-65 and on a good flat stretch doing 75-MPH with cruise on I see 4 psi boost and 525 EGT:-jammin

Probably around 65. With the 4.10 rear, going much faster really sucks the fuel.

Haven't met any fellow Hawkeye's yet in person, but have gotten a lot of good advice from Smokin', Farmboy (Adam) and several others from the great state of Iowa. Joined the local FTE chapter, and hope to meet some of them in person one of these days.

Different turbos will have different numbers. When I had my stocker, I was running about 4-5 psi & 600 deg EGTs on flat road at 70mph. With the van turbo, my EGTs dropped 50-100 degrees, and my boost is down to about 2-3psi under the same conditions. What that tells me is the stock turbo was becoming too much of a restriction even at 70mph! Why else would the EGTs go *DOWN* when the boost drops?
