Foggy headlights!

Hey guys,
My headlights are staring to get that foggy haze on the surface of the plastic lens. What do you guys use to clean them up?
Thanks, Nick

I know Meguiar's recently put out a headlight cleaning/restoring kit. I've not used it yet, but I'm a big Meguiar's fan and have been for 20 years.

I have also heard that you can use flouride toothpaste. Something about the flouride that cleans up the yellow/fog.

If you are daring, you can use some REALLY fine grit sandpaper too (that's what the pros use). I don't know what to follow it up with to polish the lenses, though.

I used a kit from Habor Freight a couple months ago, and it really brought the lens back to clear. I looked on their site, but couldn't find it. It was a 3 step kit with enough to do both head lights.

This stuff usually does pretty well for minor clouding...

I used the Meguiar's as well. Good stuff. I had one that just started to get a little yellowish tint to it on the top part of the lens and it took care of it nicely.

I wet sand with a high grit sand paper and use maquiars plast-x polish. Wet sand with 1000, 1500, 2000 grit sandpaper alternating directions (horizontal, vertical, horizontal as you step through the grits). Remember to keep things real wet. then polish with a plastics polish. Unless there is damage on the inside of the lens, your lens will look like new. I've done it to several vehicles recently. You basically have to get rid of the oxidized plastic. Plastic always yellow with time as it oxidizes. just a fact of life.

This work pretty good I used the habor freight a little while back and it was sure worth the money. There was a coupon then but I was in my local HF store this week and they still had some. The kit comes with all you need but the drill and water

Heres the link for the harbor freight stuff that Rick was talking about and it looks like it is on sale again....http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...CategoryID=440

Im going after work to get me some and clean my lenses as well.....

miller_feed 08-28-2009 03:42 PM

Thats the kit Ron. Glad it's still on sale. Like I told you a little while ago. It took me a while to do mine, because the more Miller Lite I drank the blurrier the lens looked, so I kept pollishing. :-partybud:-missingt

I used a kit from Advance Auto about 2 years ago and one lense has started fogging again a little more than the other.

The question is: Has anyone ever used one of the polishing kits like, or similar to, the one from Harbor Freight after they have had the water sanding & sealer kit used on them?

The reason I ask is because I had rather have a polished lense than one with all the sealer on it.

Just wondering if the polishing kit will remove the hard sealer. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jim

Bottle of Blue Magic from K-Mart for 6.95 and elbow grease worked for me.

Visseroth 08-31-2009 08:21 AM

I just buffed my headlights with a buffing kit that I picked up at Napa for 20 bucks. It has a mounting pad for the drill and comes with 6 buffing pads. Made a big difference and only took me about 20 minutes tops to do both my headlights and my wife's van headlights. I take care of my wife's headlights during the off hours if you get my drift }>

Oh, and they all look almost new, it's sick what just a few minutes did to those lights.
