1995 F250 Tank Switch/Selector Valve
 

I've read about all of the dual tank issue threads on here and all it's done is made me cross-eyed! Hoping you guys can give me the short & nasty on my problem.

I just recently purchased a 1995 F250 4x4 Ext Cab Powerstroke Diesel. The guy I bought it from said he filled up the front tank but can't get it pull from there, so I've been using the rear tank. Here are the symptoms:

Selector Switch in the "Rear" position reads fuel fine on the gauge and uses out of the rear tank. Switching to "Front" continues to read and pull fuel from the rear tank.

I'm thinking the switch on the dash is bad since the truck doesn't recognize the change. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can narrow down the problem? Nothing like having a new truck and a full tank of fuel and not being able to burn it!

Have someone lay under the truck below the fuel tank selector valve motor.
Turn on the key and switch tanks and see if he hears or can feel the motor run.
If it does not run then unplug the selector valve and use a test light (a meter is no good here) and check the wire per the wiring diagram as you switch tanks.
If the test light lights as the dash switch is changed and the motor does not run then replace the valve motor.

I know this thread started as an F250, Well I recently bought a 1995 F350 and the front tank doesn't register on the gage (I think I see a pattern here)! Will the same thing work for me in my situation??? :-huh I do not have any manuals, books or owner's guide on this YET.

If your 1995 is a DIESEL then the diagram above is for your truck also.
Yes you can also use the same procedure.

No that will not work for you, you do not have a motorized fuel valve.

You more than likely have a sunk float and the float will have to be replaced.

I looked at mine a bit. Haven't had a chance to test the switch or take the valve apart, but I did locate the valve and it did not hum or anything when the switch was flipped. Looks like I'll have a little bit to do this weekend to see what I need to get to fix it. Thanks for all the information!

Has anyone taken an old fuel selector valve apart? My truck is stuck on the rear tank I have a 86 F350 and in order to replace it Ford wants $290.00 for it I have found other selector valve but they don't plug in without a lot of changing around. I may have other problems but checked fuse-good,checked the one fuel pump-good don't see or hear another pump, fuel lines-good carburetor -good down to this fuel selector valve again.Has anyone converted to a different system and gotten rid of Ford's fuel selector valve and how did you do it.

You want to re-word that and run it by again.
It does sound like a bad back FDM and maybe the front one too but can not tell by the way you worded it.

Is your truck gas or diesel? If it's gas there is no selector valve so your problem is with the in-tank fuel delivery modules that contain the pumps and check valves that are supposed to prevent cross flow between tanks.

I was going to start a thread in the Pre-Powerstroke forum, but since my problem very closely matches the others here, I will post here.

Truck: 1993 F250 7.3 liter IDI diesel non-turbo.

PO informed me at time of sale that midship tank had a locking cap to which he did NOT have a key. Tank had been unused for around 4 years. I removed the locking cap and replaced with a Stant cap. Dropped the midship tank and removed the old fuel. Replaced the broken lift tube foot as well. Remounted tank and filled with quarter-tank of diesel.

Changing the in-dash switch to the midship tank results in a gauge reading of far below empty, but the truck continues to pull diesel from the rear tank (IDI has block-mounted fuel pump). I am interpreting this to mean that the fuel tank selector, mounted on the frame rail near the midship tank, is not responding to the in-dash tank select switch.

Is there a chance that I can remove and clean the tank selector and return it to service, or am I better off just laying out the cash for an aftermarket replacement?

Your fuel system does not sound factory.
The fuel gauge selector is controlled by a motor in the fuel tank selector valve.
Your dash switch only operates the motor in the valve.

The PO may have ran the fuel line around the valve and now the fuel gauge selector in the valve is selecting and open wire when it is switched.

No I have not heard of anybody cleaning a motorized fuel selector valve.

Do you have a photo of the fuel valve on the frame?
