460 engine spec's

A guy on here, cant remember his screen name, but pretty good with the specs, numbers & equip that came on the 385 series engine.

What I need to know, a 1973 year D1 block 429 that came in a Ford LTD & the heads were D3VEs, what exhaust valves would have came in those heads from Ford.
Just a plain ol valve, stainless, Inconal, Stellite or sodium filled.
I have had the D3s serviced & wondering now if the exhaust valves are the Inconal type or not.
Thanks in advance, Neil

Ok, since we dont have edit I cant add to the first post so I got another question.

Got a 1984 model 460 carb & need to know CFM & jet sizes.
Numbers on the little aluminum tag are, Motorcraft E3TE-RD B4E7
I'll look on the carb body itseft & see if any numbers stamped onto it.

Carb on the 87 model, numbers stamped onto the carb body right in front of choke flap,
E6JL-9510-AB
List 50278-1
1887

What size jets came stock in that carb.
Thanks, Neil

460 engine spec's

I recently had my motocraft 4bbl rebuilt after my engine performance went real weak on my 75 supercab, 460. No change in the weak performance. I at first presumed the heads were bad. Yet my brother says it sounds like a timing chain needs replacing since the 70's Fords came with the plastic-coated timing gear in them while aftermarket ones are full metal. Best way of confirming this is to find the plastic pieces floating around in the oil pan. Same thing as a stretched timing chain when the extra free-play is in the chain then.

Side note* I heard thru the grapevine from another enthusiast, that a guy was talking about he replaced a stock timing set in his 460 with a timing set meant for a 1969 Mustang 429 C J engine. It was said that the engine got BETTER gas mileage, plus would smoke the tires big time from standstill at will. That was in a 1/2-ton F100 460 longbed, yet it's still lighter in gross weightthan a LWB SuperCab.

Has anyone heard of this before or tried it? I have considered it but thought i would post first on this forum of seasoned professionals for feedback. Catalog numbers are different, of course, but is there any drawbacks to this or is the timing the same or close enough, between a '69 (specifically) 429 C J and a '75 460? And if so, which should I use now? I would think that I stick to 460 timing and gap numbers if I tried it. Thanks

Fordman this is a yr old thread LOL

To answer your question yes the earlier straight up timing chains will gain you more power. After 73 ford retarded the cam timing for emissions purposes. It's not just the CJ engines it was any of the 71 and earlier engines. You can just order an aftermarket roller timing set adn use the zero degree setting and do the same thing usually cheaper then looking for factory replacement sets.

Don't need the info. Most all truck 460 engines came with a 600 CFM 4180 Holley carb and for sure the 1984 did. The 4180 is a perverted version of the Holley 4150/4160 carb which is a good carb. However the 4180 was made into an emissions carb and hurts performance and fuel economy. I replaced mine on my 1984 F250 Super-cab, Super-duty, 460 with C6 and 4.10 rearend and saw a major improvement in performance and MPG. Throttle response was greatly improved and mpg was up 2 mpg and when you were getting 6.5 to 7.5 mpg, 2 mpg is a giant jump. Oh, I replaced mine with a plain Jane old style Holley 4160 carb, list number 1850, 600 CFM with vacuum secondaries.

Monsterbaby & Bear,
Its been a good while since I been on here, & during that time, the motorhome with the 460 engine I was working on has been wrecked, totaled out & I dont have it anymore.

I would like to thank both of you, for your help you have given me while I was dealing with the 460.
After all the information you guys gave me, what to do & what not to do, man that ol 460 would run. Last long trip we made, west, out on I-40 she was running about half throttle pulling 24,000 lbs down the road, so I was well pleased.

We now have a newer motorhome, 99 model with the 275 hp V10, 4L100 trans on a Ford F-53 Chassis.
No problems with the engine or trans so far, but if there is, I know where to come for help.
Got 3 whole 460,s & 1 429 took apart sitting at my shop, so if you two guy need someting off of them just let me know.
Thanks again, Neil

sorry to ask this after this has been here so long but what year was that carb that you put onto your 460 the 4150/4160 and was it a 4bbl or 2bbl? and if it is a 4bbl would the intake fit on my 84? i have a f-250 with a 2bbl and looking to get a liitle more out of it with out doing a whole hell of a lot to it, thanks.

The Holley carb I used is an old Holley List 1850 from back in the 1970's I have had in one of my goodie boxes for years. It was used on several engines at one time or another. The carb is a 4160 4 barrel and has the same standard square bore bolt pattern that Holley used on all there 4150/4160 carbs except for the spred bore carbs. So yes it will bolt to the 1984 intake, mainly because it bolts to the 1984 460 in my truck which has the standard Holley 4150/4160 bolt pattern.

what i meant if it bolted up was the intake to the heads and what years would be able to fit onto my (84) 460 and thank you for the quick reply. im just trying to find something that will work on my truck with out breaking the bank and something that will fit so i dont end up with my intake off and stuck till i do find soemthing that will fit... lol thanks again

The first question is where did you find a 460 with a 2 barrel? Since ALL 460's came with a 4 barrel on them. There were 2 barrel 429s, but no 460 ever came with one. All 429 and 460 intakes are interchangeable, except for the BOSS 429, but some of those intakes will have had Spread Bore bolt patterns (small primary holes and large secondary holes and the bolt/studs will not be evenly spaced.

BeastF-250 12-28-2010 12:36 AM

hey i thought that it just came with a 2bbl to have better mpg, i get 10 city then i went 60 miles or so on 1/4 tank on the center tank so i was thinking it got pretty good. but since its will be a four wheelin truck im looking to get all the basic power items now till i got a better truck to drive then this is my toy... lol but yes it is a 460 with a 2bbl. the motor was replaced 4 or 5 years back before i bought it. so i know its a 460, it could have been a 427 tho... idk

BeastF-250 12-28-2010 12:43 AM

ok... well it seems to be rare. i found another forum that they were talking about this as well here it is for you.
