Ignition switch key tumbler removal
 

I having a problem getting the tumbler out of the ignition switch. I put the key in and turn it to ACC then put a drill bit into the hole and turn counter clockwise. It feels like something is grabbing the drill bit when I turn it. If I pull it out a little the key turns to the left past ACC but will not come out of the bezel, any ideas on why it would not remove?

Not sure, the purpose for the paper clip, or in your case, drill bit, is only to unseat the tiny check ball that's seated in the hole. Perhaps inserting the drill bit too far causing the tumble to bind and not allowing the tumbler to release and rotate. May try inserting just enough to release the ball while rotating the key counter clockwise. Keep in mind, needs to be in same position when installing. Anyhow, food for thought.

I can get it to rotate past ACC and come out a little but will not remove all the way. I want to pull the switch from the bezel, but if tumbler is still in place other post state will not come out.

Maybe try a small smooth nail or paper clip rather than the drill bit.

With the key turned flat 9:00-3:00 it should pull out. It has to be turned flat to come out. I have always used a paper clip.

I'll try the horizontal position and see what happens.

I got it out, but not without damage. The cover for the tumbers posts must have come up some and was bent pretty bad on removal. It must have come up enough to not allow for it to just pop out. Some of the springs went when removed so it's time to order a new set tumbler and set for the door as well. Thanks for the replies

I just did about the same on my 64. My Napa had the ignition switch assembly with keys as well as door locks in stock. less than 60 bucks and all nice and shiny.

Were the doors keyed to the ignition key?

no, i went to my local locksmith and he re keyed the ignition to match the door locks for 8 dollars.

Suggest include the switch if have not done so. The tumbler should not have been that difficult to remove, and if damaged in the process I suspect the tumbler housing in the switch had something to do with it. Don't believe I would take the chance and insert the new tumbler in the old switch, may find you are face with the same problem before replacing, if recall they run less than $20. There is a pin on the tumbler that inserts into a slot in the switch housing, can only go in 1 way, thus the need to put the tumbler in the full counterclock position to remove or install. If either are damaged in any way then it will be difficult to remove in the future, and likely not work as it should, :-banghead, may save the cost of another tumbler assembly in the future.
