1963 econoline

I have a 1963 econoline...3 on the tree... 170 ci...looking to lower the rpm's over the road... The 170 is bored out, over sized cam, & progressive 2 brl carb... I have plenty of power... Looking for an add on overdrive unit, 3 speed trans. W/overdrive, or 2 speed rearend... Anybody have any of the above for sale??? Or know where i can buy??? Or even know exactly what to look for as far as my easiest & least expensive solution???

Thanks,
rich

Welcome to FTE

There was never an overdrive transmission available for the 144/170 or 200 engine. There were no 2 speed rear axles available, either.

There were several different rear axle ratios available, and don't forget that Ford also offered the optional Dagenham 4 speed manual transmission on 1962/64's (also available in Falcons).

Where is the 4 speed shift lever? On the Econoline's, it's on steering column aka 4 on the tree! No kidding.

Never heard of 4 on the tree...a 4th would probably equal an overdrive... Any idea where i could locate one of those units???

Thanks,
rich

4th is not an overdrive. Dagenham = English Ford transmission used primarily in 1962/63 Falcon's with 170 engines (shift lever is on the floor), and 1962/64 Econolines (column shift).

I haven't seen one of these transmissions since my high school buddy traded in his 1963 Falcon for a Porsche Carrera in 1967.

Even if you could find the transmission, where could you possibly find the Econoline's shift linkage?

There was a guy up here with a dagenham 4 spd for sale, but I can't find the ad. Maybe its sold. Its the first one I've ever seen advertised for sale.
