2.3 timing - aux. sprocket??? 1989

Here is a picture of my engine. The aux. sprocket has a timing point on it (look for the red "X"), does that align with anything for proper timing? I have a '95 Ford service manual and it shows on a '95 Ranger 2.3 there is a timing mark on the cover that aligns with the diamond shaped mark on the aux. sprocket. I just want to be sure that my '89 does or does not get aligned with any other mark? I disturbed the sprocket when I accidentally rotated it with the belt off.

Thanks,

As near as I can determine from reading about camshaft timing and belt installation in my '91 Ranger Truck Shop Manual, the key step reads: "Position the crankshaft sprocket to align with the TDC mark and the camshaft sprocket to align with the camshaft timing pointer." I do not find any reference to aligning the auxiliary sprocket with anything, even though your picture shows a mark on that sprocket. It looks like Ford used the same sprocket on the camshaft and auxiliary shaft.

I'd say, "Don't worry about it."

Isn 't that the sproket for the distributor. Your 89 still has a distributor.

No distributor

'89 has no distributor. Without tearing the engine completely apart, I'm assuming the aux. sprocket drives the oil pump and that's it?

Thanks,

ok now i know.is there a counter balance shaft on these 2.3's.i'm new to these engines sorry.just hate to see fairlanaic get this together and be out of balance, plus it's a learning experience for me.

I just replaced my belt also and had the same problem. My Hanes manual shows that Aux. Gear lines up with the camshaft gear when the camshaft gear is set. So it points toward the Camshaft timing mark, and it is the gear for the Oil Pump. Hope that helps.
