2007 trans flush&change
 
My son just took my 2007 expy to the dealer for a trans oil change and they told him it's a sealed unit that's good for "150,000 miles" with out a change,what's up with that????,is that true????,i change trans oil in all my car's and truck's every 25-30 thousand miles,btw,we flew out west and rented a suv for our trip and got a Nisson pathfinder with a V 6 and it has been getting around 20-21 MPG,the expy does that good,sometime's better except around town when it drop's off to around 14 MPG,the expy does NOT like in town driving but is GREAT on the open road and has a lot less road noise than the pathfinder,I'm NOT impressed with the rental.

Yep that is Ford's recommended service interval. I personally wouldn't let it go that long. Maybe every 60k miles will be good. Just make SURE the use the right fluid. I think it's Mercon SP and it's about 8 bucks per quart.

-----------I can go along with that,60,000 mile's, but it sounded like they did not want to do it tell the 150,000 mile mark,it's my expy and my money that's paying for the service and they said NO,that's the part i find strange.

------- I can go along with the 60,000 mile change but if they refuse to change it at 36,000 mile's it sound's like they they would also refuse the change at 60,000 mile's,it's my expy and my money that pay's for the change,i find it strange they would refuse to do it.

Find another dealer. It's not a sealed unit. It does not have a dipstick, but it does have a pan that can be dropped, filter changed, etc. It may be harder to add fluid than the older trans, but not that big a deal.

I thought the manual said 30K or 36k. I just had ours changed at the dealer. They said there was no filter to change though.

Filter is part #7L1Z7A098A

They may have just unhooked the line to the cooler and flushed it that way. Saved time and didn't have to drop the pan.

I'd got with 50K miles but then again I'm in the southeast where it's hot and do a lot of off highway and slow speed driving. 25K is my ideal but that gets expensive. I wouldn't got that far. It isn't a sealed unit but it is easy to pump oil into, it's just like a differential fill port on the side.

The problem is if you don't do it when the owners manual says. Ford will walk away. Don't ask me how I know.

Yeah, the manual does say 150,000 miles. That is way too long IMO. I think 50-60K is plenty.

Ford does have a sealed tranny they use. I think it is MFG by LandRover, or Volvo, or Mercedes. Not sure, I honestly cant remember. However.

In this time of throw away, Low/No maintenance. That is what sells. Long intervals between fluid, or normal maint. The sales people sell it as the cost of ownership. The question is? Do you plan on keeping it for along time? is it going to be turned in (lease). If you are like me, 15 years later still driving the same vehicle, then change it every 60,000 miles. If not, not your worry who cares.

The new tranny's arent flushed like the old ones. The new torqueshift cannot be flushed, it will cook it. It has an inline filter, that looks like a roll of toilet paper. It has a filter in the pan for the big stuff. I did my tranny at 35,000 cuz I tow, and will kepp it for 15 years if not more.

The expy does not use the Torqshift, it's a 6R.

I've alway's change tran's fluid every 25K-30K mile's,i keep mine around 10 year's,my 2002 7.3 PSD F350 i'm keeping forever!!!!,just comming up on 80K and NO WAY do i want a 6.Oh Oh or a cab off 6.4 ,the expy I'll keep at least 10 year's,I can buy a lot of oil for the price of a new tran's and not have to deal with the down time,I'm 63 and as my dad said year's ago,"oil's cheeper than bearing's",even @ $8.00 a qt!!!!,I'll try a diffrent dealer when i get back from our trip,thank's for the reply's,John

I wonder if ATSG prints a tranny manual for these trannys (I have an 07 EL). I have bought manuals for AOD's and the E4OD by ATSG and they do give operational descriptions (solenoids etc) and troubleshooting proceedures. I would think that somewhere there is an expectation that someone else other than Ford would have to work on or rebuild one of these things. I have found that when you start looking at the manuals, trannys are not nearly as daunting as they seem Not to say they arent complicated, but they are a long way from rocket science. I agree with poppie, its my tranny, I will pour whatever, whenever, into it if I feel its right ;). I havnt crawled under mine and really scoped out the tranny and tranny pan.

From the few pictures I have seen, the 6R case dosnt appear greatly different than the E4OD. Yea, I know that its inside that counts :)
