1987 f-150 short box step-side......INFO wanted.

Hey guys, My brother has a 1987 f-150 lariat 2wd 4-speed. The truck has the 80-86 style flare side box with the chain-up tailgate, BUT 87 style fenders. As far as I know, ford did not make a flare/step side from 87-91? From what he could find out, Ford used the left over box internals from 80-86 and made the correct fiberglass fenders?

Anyone know any specifics about this configuration.

Truck also has the 302 H.O., the same ones that were put in some of the 1986 lariats, etc.

thanks for any info.:-X15

VERY rare!!! Ford only made the stepside bed in 87 for the 87-91 body style. old style box w/ correct wheelwell moldings. Engine should be a FI 302, same 302 in all the trucks since about 86. If its in good shape that box is worth its weight in gold. Tell him to hang on to that truck, hes got a VERY rare item right there!

well.........when he got the truck from my dad in I think in 94 it was mint. I mean other than a few rock chips..........there wasn't s speck of rust and hardly a dent. It was red with a sport stripe package. Has the borg warner 4-speed lariat interior with the 302 h.o.

SINCE THEN, BEFORE WE REALIZED HOW RARE THE BOX WAS.

He put on a 92-96 front clip, shaved the door handles, dropped in 7 inches, patched over the gas filler and moved it inside the box, and made a custom flat tailgate and painted in black.

It really is a sweet looking truck. It sucks though that it was in such NICE condition. He still has the tailgate, original rear bumper etc.

I have been looking, and it seems that finding one of those rear fenders would be a tough task. Those boxes were only ever put on 1987's correct?? Or did they put them on all the way through to 1991??

thanks for the info man!

ONLY available in 87. From 88-91 you could only get the fleetside short box. REALLY sucks to hear how much hes changed things on it.

shanes66charger 07-19-2009 09:37 PM

yeah, trust me HE'S VERY AWARE of what he had. Although none of us realized HOW rare it indeed was. He welded up the stake pockets and capped the end tubes on the box as well.

I'll get some pics of what it used to look like, it was really a mint truck.

Do you have any idea how I could find out how many were produced? I know it was built in the kansas plant.

1987 ford f150 stepside

I just bought a really nice 1987 ford f150 stepside and I'm just curious about the truck. it looks like two different trucks put together. There are No Good pictures any where on the internet and I would like to see what rear bumper came on the 87 stepside.

Diesel_Brad 05-14-2010 06:09 PM

The 87 came with the same rear bumper the 80-86 stepsides had

1987 ford f150 stepside

well I'm missing the rear Bumper, there is just some fabbed sheet metal where the bumper should be. Its gonna be hard to find that rear bumper, do you know what other years will fit? or how I can find an original rear bumper ? thanks

Althought LMC does not have a listing for a 80-87 stepside bumper....the 70s is the same. Here is one link 1973-79 F100 - F150 - F250 1978-79 Bronco Premium Chrome Replacement Bumpers > LMC Truck > Premium Chrome Replacement Bumpers For 1973-79 F100 - F150 - F250 1978-79 Bronco you will still need mounting brackets, but if you are good at making things they are not hard to make,
