transmission problems

Hello everyone. I have a question and was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 1985 F-150 xl with auto trans. The forward gears don't work at all even when revving the engine it does not move at all. Reverse and neutral work. One of my friends told me it could be a small $15 part that has to do with the vacuum. Is this a good possibility or is the trans done? Thankyou

If the part your friend is talking about is the Vacuum modulator the trans should still go into first gear but usually wont\'t shift out of it, or past second, what does the fluid look and smell like? That will give you a good indication of the trans condition.

Thanks for the reply. Well no matter what she has to go to make room for a 95 mercury cougar. when i was driving it the back clunked and dropped, i had to pull to the side of the road park it, and it wouldnt drive in forward after that. I was hoping it would be a cheap fix because around where i live everyone is looking to buy something they can actually drive from the start. The trans fluid is really dirty. I was trying to sell it for $500 if it actually moved, but now $250 or 1-800-junk cars she has to go by this weekend.

Donate it, and take it off of your taxes, a lot of places accept cars and trucks as charity donations, just look in the phone book, or your local MVA (website, etc.)sometimes has literature on places, I know the MVA in Annapolis MD has a huge banner behind the counter advertising places that accept them. You usually do better donating because they usually give you book value for the car/truck. Good Luck!
