V10 blowing spark plus on several cylinders
 

One of my trucks has the V10 in it. I have had cylinder # 9 blow the spark plug 3 times. Other cylinders have blown also. I just picked the truck up being fixed ant Ford and #2 and # 4 cylinders spark plus were fixed. Drove the truck from the shop and before I got back to the store, number #9 blew for the 3rd time. Just paid them over $800 and another cylinder that they charged me a bunch blew. I now have over $3K in this and they are now telling me I need new heads for another $4500.

This has to be a V10 problem I would think. Is there anyway to find out about recalls? the Ford guy says there isn't any. How can my V10 have so many problems?

What year is it? Go down to the V10 forum on this site and look around.

It's a "known issue" up until sometime in 2002, and then it became very VERY rare.

3 times on one plug? What did they do? Did they do an insert on it? Or just try to put another plug in and hope for the best?

Sounds a lot like the dealer techs are to blame for the repeats.

Once an insert is done in a hole, it NEVER comes out if it's done right.

Mods, can you move this to the V10 area? thanks

You need to find another repair shop or do this yourself.
Most that have done a timesert repair or the like never have another problem with that cylinder.

It is not a V10 only problem.
You might pick up one of these kits and find another shop.
If you can't do it yourself, you could let the mechanic use it.

I think you should get ahold of these guys and let them fix your plug problems. Some here have used them before. Will cost a lot less than new heads.

I will say I believe the stealerships screwed up the repairs royally. A repaired plug done right should not blow out especially 2 times after the fix.

Need to know the year.

It is a 1998.

I merged your two threads and deleted two posts to clean it up.

Back to the subject at hand.

Since it's a 98, I'm going to assume it's an E-series van?

Did you ever change the plugs in the past 11-12 years?

Correct E series. I bought the truck with 68K on it so I don't know if the previous guy did.

I suspect that the iron un-plated plugs are rusting, and the aluminum threads are corroding, and they are working themselves loose.

I don't have an easy answer, except to do inserts on all 10 holes.

If they already did inserts on some of them, and the inserts came out, I'm not sure if another insert is possible. I THINK so, depending on the brand of insert and what the dealer/mechanic did the first time.

Took truck into dealer for miss, rough idle. Codes came up. Misfires on 1 and 2 cylinders. Replaced 1 and 2 coils on plugs. replace oxygen sensor. checked codes, ok. $569.61

3 days later 2/22/08.
Excessive noise from engine and runs rough. Found #9 spark plug blown out of cylinder head. Re tapped and installed helicoil.
Took cylinder head off and found debris on cylinder #9 piston. Removed debris and reassembled. Checked ok. total bill $2627.35

1/12/09
Took truck back for excessive engine noise and engine running rough. Found helicoil and spark plug blown out of #9 again. Installed oversize helicoil. Replaced broken coil on #9 cylinder. $202.63 repair

6/5/09
Took truck back for excessive noise and runny rough. Replaced #2 and # 6 coil on plug and spark plugs. Welded crack in exhaust. All bolts broke off when removed manifold. Drilled and tapped and installed new bolts. $812.75 repair

Picked up truck and drove it 30 miles and excessive engine returned. Truck was towed back to dealer and they told us #9 plug blew out again. Needs new heads. Repair would cost $4500.
