302/5.0 HO starter.

I swapped a 5.0 HO into my F-150 and used the old 302 bellhousing, and the starter won't engage the smaller diameter flywheel. Will this be solved by using a mustang starter, or do I need to use the mustang's bellhousing?

What was the old engine/tranny combo including the engine year, and what is it now?

Had a '75 302 with a 3.03 manual (you know, the toploader 3-speed). I'm using the same tranny with an '87 5.0 HO out of a Mustang GT. The only issue is that the Mustang was automatic, so I ordered the flywheel for a standard GT, which is a half-inch smaller in diameter. Maybe an inch, I forget. The starter for the F-150 wouldn't engage the flywheel, so unless I just have a bad starter...

i think you need a starter for an 87 F150 running a manual tranny.

Isn't the F-150 flywheel from '87 going to be the same as the '75? I think the Mustang GT just uses a different size flywheel than the trucks.

A mustang uses a T5 so I think you got the wrong flywheel. If you still have the flywheel from the old motor count the teeth, I'm guessing it's a 164 tooth and it'll have a 28oz balance weight so you can't use it on the new motor, it needs a 50oz flywheel.

I have a 50 ounce flywheel, so that's ok. Are you saying the mounting point for the starter is different on a T-5?

savage066 05-28-2009 07:23 AM

I figured the T-5 housing still has to bolt up to the same block that my old bell housing does, and the starter goes in the same place...

Yes the belhousing bolt pattern is the same, but there are 2 different size flywheels available for the Windsor family of motors and the starter is offset a little differently for each one. Somebody posted a pic of the 2 different seperator plates available for these motors one time but I can't find it. Here's a pic of a universal plate from summit that accomodates the two starter locations...

so you will need a flywheel for an 87 5.0 out of a truck. then you can use the starter from your 75
