Program Keyless Remote

I have a 2001 Expedition that I just bought. Previous owner lost the keyless remote. I only have one key so I wanted to get another key as well as the remote. Can I program the remote and the key myself without the dealer doing it?

The fob you can program yourself, but the key has to be programmed by the dealer. That is how it went for us when one of our kids lost a key with a fob for a 2000 Taurus.

If you need directions on who to program the REMOTE, Ill post/email them to you.Its simple. The key, needs to be done at the dealership.

There are a few locksmiths out there who have the proper equipment to program additional keys as well. So check around.

One additional comment, shop around as I found there was quite a price variation among the Ford dealers in my area for making additional keys.

Not to thread jack but I have the same problem, NO remotes and one PATS key, however I do have a NON pats key as well. Can I program a 2nd & 3rd PATS key off the non pats key as long as I put the pats key next to the column?

In 97 and 98 you can program a second PATS key by using one existing PATS key. Starting in 99 you need 2 existing PATS keys to program in a third. And no, you cannot use to same PATS key twice, the two keys have to be different. If you do not have 2 existing PATS keys, then you're stuck going to the dealer for the programming.

I'm going to bump an old thread here to see if anyone has more info on programming a PATS key without 2 existing PATS keys. Are my options really Dealerships and locksmiths only?
I was at a dealer yesterday and they wanted about $200 for a new, programmed key.

Is there anyway to program the key using one of those OBDII code readers? Presumably it's all part of the same computer.

Ouch. Clear advice, but obviously not what I was wanting to hear.

Whne I picked up my '00 Expy a month ago it only had 1 remote and key. Went to dealer and bought a new key for $15 and they programmed it for $45. I thought about getting and 2nd fob but since this is not driven daily and my wife really won't drive it I decided the 1 fob and the outside key panel was good enough.

seventyseven250 I would go to a different dealer or check with a locksmith. I lost one of the keys to a 2003 Crown Vic and ended up at a locksmith and paying $40.

Since you have spent the money for the reprogramming once, I would suggest you get another blank off of ebay (about $10). Then take the blank to a hardware store and get it cut ( they often will do it for free). Then you can program it yourself. Put this key away and this way if you ever lose a key again you still have a second key so you do not have to go back to the dealer.

I've been calling around the local dealers and it looks like I can save fifty bucks or so by using a different dealer. I'll get one key programmed, and then buy a blank on ebay like was suggested.
I'm a ebay guy, so that works great for me.
Just got some replacement remotes from ebay, so I'll program those and see how they work.
