7.3 Water Pump Replacement

7.3 Ford Diesel water pump change information <o:p></o:p> Water Pump used<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Autozone DWP-9128 UPC 6 11176 00692 7<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Bolts on thermostat 6MM 1MM pitch about 25 mm long Hardened. Note they have locktite hit head with Hammer to break seal before attempting to remove or bolts will break <o:p></o:p> O Ring seal needed on bottom pump extension. O ring seal used on thermostat top housing <o:p></o:p> Wrench for Fan is 1 7/8 “ or 48 MM Wrench for holding pulley is 54 MM. Must use both wrenches to remove fan. This is the most difficult part of the pump change OEM part # 27141,, but not Ford OEM is the brand name. Replace all hoses, belts, and check idler/tensioner pulleys,thermostat |

It was mentioned that the torque was high on the bolts listed on that site. “Blackjeep” noticed error. Don't snap'em.

Thanks for all the responses. How long should this repair take to to complete? Keep in mind that I am not a mechanic, and I have only average mechanical skills.

1) The video called out 2 people special wrench (I covered this also) and a pipe wrench. I did this with the special wrench only and 1 person. What I added was !@#$!@#%$@#$^^$ and it came of easily.:-hair 2) I removed the hoses from the attachable necks and removed them with the water pump. 3) I did not remove the hose neck at the thermostat prior to removing the water pump. NOTE: I found on the first bolt it snapped off easily. The remaining 2 smacking with ball peen round end of hammer before attempting to remove prevented breaking. Don't know why they stuck. But mine did not come out as easily as the video. 4) I used the tinnnnest drop of super glue to hold the water pump gasket in place. Think pin head size. to prevent the gasket from dropping out during installation. 5) Check all pulley/bearings 6) Replace all hoses and please buy the upgraded hose that goes around the belt vs through it. This will make you life easier next time. 7) I also reused the thermostat due to not having the correct one to install. I would recommend buy the factory part for the 7.3 thermostat. :-drink |
I used a visegrip style chain wrench 19" IIRC to hold the pulley, and a small pipe wrench on the nut. It is about a 3 hour job.

I used Syl-Glide silicone lubricant from Napa on the o-rings and the pump gasket. The Syl-Glide's tackiness held the pump gasket in place.

Just a thought if you havent gotten a water pump id go with the Napa new tru flow pump part # TFW 45000. Its the best ive come by and its a one piece design so no more leaking lower neck.
