FX4 vs. STX 4X4

I was wondering what people thought of the new STX 4X4 with the 4.6 V8. I've got a little over a year left on my lease of XLT SCAB 4X4 with the 5.4 V8 and when I turn it in, I've got my heart set on an FX4 SCREW. I'm a huge fan of the FX4 packages and I prefer the black grille on the 09's over the chrome offered on the other trim lines.

That being said, who knows what type of deals are to be had when my lease is up? I'm going to buy and want an FX4 but if the rebates aren't there I may have to go a little cheaper (or buy used) and get an STX 4X4. I like the way the STX's look but have a few questions:

1) At this time it only has the 4.6l. I've only drove the 5.4. Is it a huge difference?

2) On the build a Ford website, when I load the STX up with the options I want, its almost as much as the FX4 I REALLY want! Does the STX usually get more rebates? I've always noticed more 04-09 STX's then other trims on the road.

3) IF I have to get the STX, I kinda like the floor shifter transfer case for the 4X4. Can I get this with the bucket seats/center console& carpet combo, or does it have to be the split bench & plastic floors? which I'm not crazy about.

Thanks!

If you settle for something less than you want, you will never be happy.

I think if you go from the 5.4 to the 4.6 you maybe a little dissapointed depending on your needs. The 5.4 with 3:73 gears is a nice setup if your going to be towing or just enjoy more power.

This is why I went with the FX4. I was finding if I loaded up the other models to the options I wanted the cost was about the same as the FX4. When really compared it, the FX4 was still offering more options than building up the lower models (skid plates, e-locker, center console, etc).

I purchased mine also. It was a little more than I wanted to spend also but, I knew if I comprised I would regret not getting the one I wanted.

I would have gotten an FX4 if I could have got the 3.55.
The 3.73 is the worst for milage and I don't tow heavy.
Nice truck though, specially with the better shocks and locking diff.
If lots of offroading is your thing then the FX4 is the way to go, although it is a pretty long truck for hard core trails.

Hey there. The 5.4L will be noticebly more powerful than the 4.6L and fuel econmy shouldnt be that much different. Cant go wrong eaither way though! Good Luck!

It should be no surprise that a loaded STX would be parallel in price to an FX4 or a better equipped truck. In fact, it's probably cheaper to buy a higher end package than to spec out an XL or STX as the option packages are cheaper than piecing the truck together.

The FX4 has a far better interior than the STX and you get the E-locker 3.73 LS axle and the 5.4L. The 5.4L on the STX is a very pricey option all by itself. Get what you want, be happy.

Wish you could get an FX4 Regular cab...

aridranger03 04-09-2009 09:13 PM

If I can remember correctly you can only get an STX in a reg. cab or supercab and an FX4 in supercab or supercrew.

The 5.4 is not an option on the STX, just the 4.6 3v.

Thanks for the correction. I went on the build site and tried to add a 5.4L and it reduced the STX package to an XL package. Too bad, the STX would be bad a$$ with the 5.4L.

Thanks to all who replied. My ultimate choice would be the FX4 SuperCrew, but as I asked, it seems that Ford sometimes offers different rebates on different packages. Case in point, when I got my XLT Supercab with the chrome package, they were offering bigger rebates on it then other trim lines. If the price isn't right on an FX4 supercrew or even a supercab, I may opt to go for the STX 4X4. Of course I'd rather have the FX4 anyday but may not be able to afford it if good deals are not be had. But because I prefer the black grille over the chrome I may go with an STX.

Does anyone know the answer to my orignal question #3? Thanx to all
