1980-1986 axle code chart needed
 

I have been looking at a few 1980's trucks for sale around here, but am often unable to determine the axle ratio and weight rating. I searched a couple times, but found nothing.

Could someone please post the axle code chart for the 1980-1986 F250 and F350 trucks and identify what year manual the chart was taken from? It would be greatly appreciated.

My expertise is 1967-1979 trucks, and that is all I have manuals for...

You'll notice that some of the codes that are the same between the early and late books don't necessarily correspond when it comes to what axle they indicate. The same goes for alot of the current online decoders. Same code, different meaning.

I hate to zombie this thread... but my search brought it up right away.. and I need some clarity.

I'm looking at a 1986 f250 LD - 5.0L 302 EFI, 133" wheelbase

Type is F261 and Axle code B5 tells me it's a 4.10 LS differential with 5300LB... The only stampings on the axle I can find say "FORD"., there is a little metal tag that says V11A or something like that (I can clean it up more if necessary for a better read).

How do I tell if this is Dana or Sterling axle? I'm going to have to buy some parts and they are listed for the Dana or a Sterling E6.

The covers are shaped differently between the two.

If I remember correctly, only the dana axles have the oil level plug in the cover - the sterling axle has the level plug in the housing casting.

It actually sounds like he might have one of those Light Duty 8 Lug 8.8" axles...

Ah... will look in daylight for the fill plug..

8.8" axle.. hmmm where do I measure for this.. the whole pumpkin is about 10"or so wide...

I have a 1981 F-150 with a 3.25 open duff and am going to replace it with a 3.50 Trac-Loc with 28 splines. is there a way to find out how many spines are on my current axles? It has the 3750 pound axle with the tapered brearings.

I have no proof, but I am thinking all the axles in these trucks were 31 spline. My 1980 f150 with a 3.50 9 incher had 31 spline axles and the tapered wheel bearings.

If you want to use the 31 spline axles with the 28 spline carrier you will need to get the openings in the carrier for the axles made larger and change the spider gears to the 31 spline type. When I got a 28 spline carrier from a 70's Bronco, I swapped the ring gear onto my 31 spline carrier housing and swapped my old spider gears in place to make it all work out.

I had thought about that but I am going from a open diff to a ford trak lock and I dont think the spider dears will swap out, plus if I had the right spider gears I think the carrier would have to be disasembled to put them in. Could 28 spline axles be swapped out insead?

No, you need your original axles for it to all work. You are probably right, the limited slip spiders probably are not the same as the regular ones. You can definitely change the spiders out without taking it apart though. I have worked on too many since then to remember, but once you pull the axles and pull the pin that the other spiders ride on, they will come out of the hole in the carrier.

Not so on a 9". You need to pull the carrier, pull the ring gear, and then split the carrier in two to get at the sides and spiders.

1980/86 F100/150 9" with or without Limited Slip: The axle shafts have 31 splines.

The 9" spider gears are different with Limited Slip (C8OZ-4215-A) than without (C9AZ-4215-A).

The axle aka differential gears (C8OZ-4236-A) are the same with or without Limited Slip.

Locking = Limited Slip / Non Locking = No Limited Slip.
