1998 ford ranger red hot

i got a 1998 ford ranger with a 2.5 and the exhaust manifold get red hot after running for a while. does anyoine know what will cause that maybe a clogged cat?

Does the cat get excessively hot too? Seem like it's down on power? If so, that might be a possibility. Any codes, Check Engine Light on?

Might also be a bad fuel pressure regulator allowing excess fuel into the engine, that should trigger a code from the O2 sensors.

i aint to sure about if the cat is getting hot. it has the check engine light on but every time it reads a iac overspeed... and i have notice a loss of power and mpgs... down to like 10 miles a gal.. which after the tires and lift it was only at 14-15 miles per gal..so but ill check the cat tom and see if its gettin hot if not maybe ill replace the fuel regulator. and its a real pain to get cranked but once it starts and runs for a min with me holding the gas it will do fine after that.. so im lost on this stuff..... and i do believe its running rich to so u know im gonna get one tom. and put it on and see whats happens thanks

If the CEL is on, I would have the codes read instead of throwing parts at the engine hoping for a fix. Expect a 02 code which may or may not be part of the problem.:)jd

i have ran the codes and like i said IAC overspeed error. is the only code it brought up.. which a while back when a ran the codes at the start of all this it brought a o2 code and replaced the back when and aint got it again... and the only other code it ever brought up about 4 months ago was a egr code cant rember which oine.

When you say a loss of power... does it just become a real dog? Or is it just a bit of lost power?

Check the cat. If it's glowing red-hot... it's running rich. When mine did this, it ran like a real dog... but only 1/2 the time. I eventually changed the ignition control module (after busting the cat out to determine it wasn't clogged)... and it ran great every since.

well it does it mostly when i first start it it wont have enough power to start moving... i don't have a cat anymore due to this reason.. but once its gets going it only runs like 60...70 at the most. and it used to be quick
