ford f 150 torque converter

what are the symptoms of a bad torque converter??? it is a 90 ford f-150...the truck will not start in park but will crank up in nuetral..then when it is put into gear it just dies , kinda like letting out on a clutch without giving it any gas....just lunges a little and dies....could it be that the insides came apart in the torque converter? it was running fine when he left my house today , then got about 30 miles away and stopped for a red light and it just died on him!! did this year f150 have a torque converter clutch??? i am headed to church and will check back in a little while ...thanks for any help guys!!! if it is a tcc solenoid .....what would be the process to replace it?

and you might want to tell us what kind of transmission it has

john thigpen 03-22-2009 08:59 PM

i'm not really a ford guy , so i don't know what different trannys came in the pickup..if you could help me identify it and maybe diagnose it.....i sure would appreciate it and i would like to learn some about the fords ...what is the best way to identify the transmission? it is a 1990 ford f 150 , 5.0 ltr , 2 wheel drive......when i went and picked it up off of the side of the road , it would only crank up in nuetral and actually run.......if you tried to crank it in park it would turn over but would not fire up........when i put it in nuetral and started it i had to feather the gas pedal to keep it running as it would not get above 1000 rpms for a minute or so.......when i got it to where it would run on its own (in nuetral) i reved it up and dropped it down into drive and hit the gas.........made it halfway up the ramps on the dolley and it got to where it would not go above 1000 rpms again even with the gas pedal to the floor!! i let it roll back down the ramps , put it in nuetral and fired it back up ........put it in drive.......no noise ...no jerking.......pulled right up on the dolly whent through all the gears and no problem!! i removed the driveshaft to tow it home , got in the yard and unloaded it ...........cranks right up and shifts through all gears with no problem........(without the driveshaft in it..........i am confused ......help please

john thigpen 03-22-2009 09:02 PM

i am going to put the driveshaft back in in the morning and hopefully by then someone on here will be able and willing to lend me a hand with some info and diagnosis , i sure could use some help as i dont know all that much about fords...............with it not wanting to get above 1000 rpms ....i was leaning to it being the converter going out .....please correct me if i am heading in the wrong direction

1966Tbird 03-22-2009 09:14 PM

here is how you id your tranny http://www3.telus.net/cbradley/TransIDChart.JPG i doubt it's the converter, my best guess is you have an e4od and something with the computer is going insane (why i hate computers and tossed the one in my truck)

john thigpen 03-22-2009 09:46 PM

just went and crawled under it with the diagram in hand ...lol!! the tranny pan has METRIC aoutomatic overdrive stamped in it and has the same shape and number of bolts as the ford AOD/AODE

1966Tbird 03-22-2009 10:44 PM

well that's good it means you have an aod pop the hood there is a little black cover overtop of the throttlebody that makes it so you can't see the cables that control the throttle body, there is a cable that is black and has a spring on it, this is the tv cable that sets the line pressure on the transmission it is possible that the adjustment clip somehow broke and the trans is running full line pressure all of the time...don't mess with this cable if you don't think it's broken because it can ruin your trans if you don't know how to adjust it and it's pretty hard to adjust right...i would check that and i would change the fluids in the trans and put on a new filter

deeznuts822 03-22-2009 11:08 PM

i would also change the netural safety switch since it wont start in park. Do u have a overdrive switch on the shifter?

john thigpen 03-23-2009 11:41 AM

just put the driveshaft back in...checked the tv cable it is still attached.no od botton on the shift lever. cranked it up runs great , fluid is not burnt , at the proper level , changes back and forth between gears and moves in forward and reverse....took it down the road , at 55 mph the tach is reading 3200 to 3400 rpm sound like it is not in the proper gear, then after driving it fore a few minutes the tach started to fluctuate between 2000 and 3200 rpm, while it was fluctuating if i hit the gas pedal it was just like it was in nuetral.....pulled over and turned around and it went back to running ok with the exeption of running such a high rpm at 55 mph.......help i am lost

1966Tbird 03-23-2009 04:08 PM

does it shudder when you let off the gas from 3/4 throttle to 1/4 throttle? if so your tv cable isn't adjusted correctly.....but if it is i would say you need some new clutches but that's just my opinion
