429 worth it?
Theres a 71 429 for $400 bucks, he claims it has dove heads. Is there anyway of telling without pulling the valve cover? If it is or isnt is that price fair?

the head casting number is right above the middle exhaust ports on the outside of the heads. no need to pull valve covers. very easy to spot once you look.
$400 is not bad price if complete and in decent shape. problem with buying any complete motor is exactly what condition the internals are in. cracked block, cracked heads, spun bearings, broken pistons, etc are hard to spot from the outside. would be better if you could hear it running of course. i would offer him a lower price to start with. price all depends on what shape the motor is in and how usable the parts are. rgds Mike |
forgot to mention.
i would pull the vavle cover anyway. good indication of what type of life the engine lived depending on how clean or how much gunk has built up under the valve covers. lots of gunk and build up, probably pass on $400, if fairly clean and very little build up, $400 would be reasonable price. rgds Mike |
hey thanks, Well I found out its torn down....he says everythings there, but I probably should wait.
