PETE'S_6.0PSD 03-03-2009 04:36 PM

BTW 6.0 is as good and reliable as the last tech that worked on it. a lot of horror stories are created by untrained techs.

One thing to add to the mix is that the 06 will have a better interior and better turning radius, and a better ride. If it were me I would get the 06. It is all about years of reliable service. Simply put you have much newer stuff.

Brandon it takes more than 1000$ tocatch up with 6.0, unless 6.0 is stock. you need more than that. Not saying that cause im 6.0 guy, you know i went through few grand( read more than 10k to get reliable 400+hp) exhaust and tuner on the 6.0 will blow any 7.3 , you need more like 5-7k in 7.3 to compete with 6.0. 5R110 its a killer trans, more reliable than 4R100 unles its a BTS.
he has ARP allready if they were installed correctly and tq to 245ft tq it will be fine as long as the heads were straight, they dont need to be retorqued. all he needs is a nice SCT tunes and EGR delete and he is flying. now they can tune FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) and get the throttle to be like in a gaser right of the start.
there is few guys running just tuning intake and exhaust and put 400+hp on a dyno. where 7.3 you need injectors 2000,turbo 1500,exhaust,tuner and pray to God your trans will stay in one piece. so we talking 5000 before you can be close to 6.0.
VGT turbos are all the same the issue was thet you have to drive them like you stole it otherwise carbon buildup will stick the vains and you turbo needs cleaning and or replacement, 03 6.0 had the coolest turbos which sounded like F16 taking off if you did cat delete and no muffler. 04 up have more Vains and silencer ring.
EGR problems are from casting sand cloging EGR and carbon buildup. thats why a lot of guys recomment coolant filter .
hope this helps any...
BTW Danny Imelmo has run 12.51 on spray on th 1/4 mile.... SC 4x4

Yeah Pete, I agree, to all those points. I was just saying that for a grand he could have the HP of the stock 6.0, but I didnt really make that clear.

I think Danny is also putting a 6.0 in the old F100 custom he bought here in Alabama last May. (check out the project log thread over there)

I own an 02 and I am very happy with it!
The 06/07 models with the 6.0 were def much more reliable and would say if you prefer a manual trans, get it!!!
good luck!

spdmpo 03-04-2009 12:30 AM

Well since you're asking, I wouldn't have a 6.0 no matter what year and wouldn't matter to me if they've done headbolts or not. I'd take a 6.4 though. I also personally wouldn't want a manual trans.
Conversely, I wouldn't pay anywhere near $16,900 for an 02 7.3 either. So my choice is either beat him up on the price really, really good; or neither.
I also don't play the horsepower game either. Not that I don't like it, just don't have to have excess. Driving around with a DP tuner set on 80hp, I can't understand needing more. I'll take my reliable workhorse over the 6.0.

makomaker 03-04-2009 04:39 AM

I wouldn't buy the 6.0 if obama and pelosi backed two of em up the house and wrote me checks to take 'em. My experience with the 6.0 is well documented.

I believe the untrained techs and the flaws of the early 6.0s just murdered them the more I read and the more I look around if it is studed and has been well maintained and you like a 6 spd I would get the 06 because there ride and turning radius is so much better then ours. A chip intake and exhaust you would have a good truck but he is asking way to much for that 7.3L yes it is low miles but there is trucks with lower miles going for lower prices. The 6.0s are getting more reliable if you get the studs in there and emmissions so it really boils down to do you want an auto or a stick?

Don't forget to mention that you can operate the radio at volumes less than 50% and still hear it! I love the 7.3, but it sure does clatter. Then flip the DP Tuner on...wow!

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Tell me about it Scott heh I have a 2000 and they have less insulation on the firewall then the 01s+ so she is a good bit louder on the inside of the truck. Cold mornings it sounds like the engine is right there infront of you with no insulation. But I still love my truck, throw some Bquiet in there along with an 06 frame and I would be in love

What I wouldn't give for coil springs...
Did the 6.0's still have all the power steering problems that the 7.3's did? I have been fighting mine for years now.

eric777 03-04-2009 08:24 AM

I have been on the phone w/ a dealer or two and I'm terrified about having a warranty (on a 6.0) issue and them denying it for any mod I have.

Kwikkordead 03-04-2009 08:33 AM

The 6.0 has enough power to where you don't really need to mod it anyway.

eric777 03-04-2009 08:59 AM

True True- But it's sure tempting to put a mild tuner on there and then drive it. Nothing crazy but something.

jdecker88 03-04-2009 09:35 AM

If you get it go to Cobbs Performance and get some Spartan tunes for the 6.0 Matt does good work.

Now there is a thing with the 05s and some 06s about the "Death Wobble" where the truck vibrates and goes all over the place at hwy speeds.

eric777 03-04-2009 10:01 AM

The warranty thing is really worring me though. I might just have to get another 7.3
