Trouble with 5R100 shifting gears in snow
 

It recently snowed about 6 inches here and was around 30 degrees, the snow was real slushy and stuck up under the truck alot, and I guess going down the road it froze all over around the bumpers, tires, the step bars, and other places. But the worst thing I noticed was that I had trouble putting the transmission in gear. At first I thought maybe the 4x4 was binding, but even when it was out of 4x4, it was hard to put it in park, reverse, it was hard shifting at all. Has anyone else experienced this. Shouldnt there be a shield under there for the linkage? I have the off road package, dont know whether that covers anything related nto the transmission, but since these trucks were made to be tough and work in these conditions, isnt it a little strange I would have this kind of problem? Should I have it looked at? Ive got 33,000 on her and dont want this to be a recurring problem. Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Never had or even heard of this problem. Our northern members never complain about this is much colder temps than that. Sounds like maybe you just had the perfect storm scenario. Slush, turned to ice, caused an issue. The skid plates are great for off roading but they also have the ability to trap snow/ice up against the items they were designed to protect.

If your problem has gone away now then I suspect it was just the perfect scenario. Remember your driveline is covered under the 5 year 60k driveline warranty so no need to panic at 33k. Your barely over the half way mark.

Back in the mid 90's I had a new chevy truck with auto tranny and once in heavysnow slush conditions it started shifting hard( lever on column) and not go into park, come to find out the slush had packed up under the truck and on the tranny linage and froze and was the problem.

Thaw it out and drive again see if problem continues,

May have had ice against linkage and froze up oil making it harder to shift:confused:

Thanks to ALL of you for the help. I also have never had a problem like this. It thawed out the next day and I have had NO issues like I did, so I guess you guys were right on the money. Weird though that it is a rare condition. You would have thought someone would have had this kind of problem. Also, thanks for letting me know about the warranty covering it til 5year mark. Its always wonderful to come to this forum because you guys are the best when it comes to asking for advice. Thanks again to all of you!
