Help with Fuel Line problem on '92 F250

I was changing inline fuel filter with retaining clips on inside using retaining clip tool - the output side came off with no problem but the input side couldn't get it off.

I looked inside the end that I removed and saw that one retaining prong was bent upward. I bent back into place and attached it back to the filter.
It would not snap onto the filter nipple.

It does not leak nor did it "pop off" all this time so...

I have several questions:
  1. Should the prongs of the clip face toward the inside of the line or should they face the outside.
  2. Since the fuel line never popped off I'm wondering whether the pressure is insufficient to the carburetor.
  3. How do I replace the flex fuel line if I'm having difficulty getting the filter off. I want to replace the lines but can't get one end off.
Thanks.

-6 AN to 5/16" hard tube adapters 640860
-6 AN to 3/8" hard tube adapters 640850

these are the ones i am using and you only need 5-7psi of pressure at the carb they just replace the factory fittings and you run -an hose up to the carb

they are made by russell performance
here is the only picture i could find that might show you how i did it but i'm running an efi pump and bypass regulator
