2004 F250 6.0 Loss of power and smoke.. Help please
 

Gents,

I will start by thanking you all in advance. I have a 2004 F250 6.0 with 40K miles on it. A few weeks ago I was scooting down the road and all of a sudden i lost total power. Not electrical or dead engine but no throttle and it was sputtering like it wanted to die. I put it in neutral and after 4-5 seconds it kicked back in and was find. Then it did the same thing about a week later. No leaking of any fluids, nothing. Took it to ford and they couldn't find anything wrong. No error codes, nada!!! Got it back and drove it about a week when today it did it again but this time was worse. Truck actually lost all power, no throttle and sounded like it wanted to die. I came to a stop and it was an extremely rough idle. Thought it would die but it didn't. But this time I had ALOT of white smoke coming from exhaust. I mean ALOT of white smoke. Never had white smoke from my truck. After 30-45 seconds I turned the engine off and restarted it and all was fine, as if nothing was wrong. I have no leaks, nothing wrong at all, no error codes, no check engine, nada. I recently had the oil cooler replaced by ford (2 months ago) because of a slight anti-freeze smell when towing a heavy load (15,000 lbs) up hill. Also my batterys have died a couple of times due to me playing radio without engine on requiring me to have to jump them.

Having said all that could it be the EGR? I have read alot and it seems this may be the problem but I am in NO WAY knowledgeable on these things. I do have an extended warranty so I am not too worried but would like to maybe throw a "bone" to the ford guys when I take it back on monday.

I'm not a diesel guy, but I would guess that you have lost a head gasket. You may want to ask in the 6.0 PSD forum, which is down the main page a bit from the Super Duty forum. Plenty of smart guys in that forum.

By the way, welcome to FTE GotdeerF250.

It's just feeling under loved because you haven't been playing with it much, only 40k miles on an '04!! Wow!

Sounds exactly like a CPS problem on a 7.3.
(Do a search on CPS, tons of threads)

Did the 6.0 have this problem too guys?

If this is it (sounds like it), it is a simple 10 minute fix.
Question is, how long would it take for them to actually start working on it...

I had the same problem at about the same milage. Truck lost power and I was feathering the throttle trying to keep it running. Shut it off and wait for awhile and all was good. Finally got to a point where I was drawing a crowd watching the white smoke pouring from the exhaust and almost dying in traffic. Thought I might have blown a head gasket....or worse. Called a buddy of mine at the dealership and he knew exactly what I was talking about. I found there was a "customer notification" published that replaced the EGR valve....I believe. I could check tomorrow if you need, but I am sure your dealer service dept should be able to tell you. Not a problem since.

My guess would be the EGR Valve and/or EGR Cooler. Not a big deal... but then again mine were done under warranty. Good luck!

same problem happend to my dad's 05 6.0 diesel, turned out it was the EGR cooler and your head gaskets are now also compromised and could blow in a couple of months...ford will cover it under warranty as long as you don't have any modifications to the truck (ford refused to cover his truck cause of his banks) but ford stocks the kit to replace the cooler cause this problem is common on that engine...good luck hope you get it fixed

I second the EGR cooler and EGR valve, a buddy of mine had that happen on his '05. He was on the freeway at 70, white smoke started pouring out and he lost power. Restarted and limped to the dealer, they replaced the EGR valve and cooler, he hasn't had a problem since.
