What Mod's???
What would you do to a stock truck? I thinking a MBRP (please tell me what one) And a SCT X3........ Is there anything I should do other then that..... It's an 05 with 60k and it gutless. My 7.3 seems to have way more power. I only tow a bass boat...... Thanks for the help.....:-drink

You have something wrong if it is gutless and does not tow as well as a 7.3L. You need to find the cause of this before installing a tuner. Maybe plugged EGR valve, etc.

what did you have done to your 7.3l? i loved mine but the 6.0 seems way more refined although IMO have more parts that need replacing than my 7.3 that only needed a CPS and Fuel Filter Bowl O-Ring leak (replaced unit).
how wild do you want to go on mods? how much money do you have to "invest"? Gauges, Exhaust, SCT, and maybe a Fuel System upgrade (RR or FASS) also reliability stuff like Coolant filters and Oil Bypass Filtration are nice... but don't start modifying unless your truck is running correctly! it will only cause more head aches and most mods void warranties too... |
Before throwing tunes at it, I highly recommend blocking off the EGR and replacing the Turbo up-pipe. This will help save your Head Gaskets.
Next Gauges, EGT's are crucial to keep an eye on them. Last is full 4" Turbo back exhaust, do not waste your $$ on just a Cat back. When was the last time you had the fuel filters replaced? |
My 2003 7.3 is all stock 2wd. My 2005 6.0 is 4wd with 6'' lift and 35's. The 7.3 just seems to have more balls... I just got the 05 less then 5k on it. Thanks for the input.....

First thing I do when buying used vehicles is to change all the fluids and filters.
A plugged air filter can impact power (check the filter minder or change it out). So can a leak in the CAC tubes (turbo air side). Plugged fuel filters can drop fuel pressure and cause issues. Even the type of engine oil used can impact performance (synthetic 5W40 being a very good choice). Use a fuel additive to ensure your fuel is in the recommended cetane range. Especially w/ your 35's and the extra weight - don't romp on it until you have it fully warmed up. IIRC - In one of the flashes, Ford limited power somewhat - until the engine warmed up. |
Mods are very subjective. Its really is a matter of personal preference. Look at everyones signature blocks for ideas. And then do your own thing and personalize your truck. But first make sure its running right and belts and hoses are in good shape my list of little things grows and grows. Every time I think about a new truck I buy a new "something" for mine; keeps the love alive between the truck "the other woman" and me. SO far:
Brush guard (black) w/4 lite force moose lites cold front for winter and bug screen for summer both from Alaska tent and tarp EGR delete and EGR cooler delete kit Garrett turbo (64mm) and power elbow MBRP stainless 4"turbo back ARP headstuds SCT tuner with custom tunes Sprayed in beadliner In the bed, on the full length running boards and on the rockers of the truck (lower 18") 98 gal aux fuel tank (Transfer Flow) Wabasto Blue heat Leer cab hieght truck topper nicely fabbed (if I do say so myself) mud flap brackets, mudflaps with diamond plate on the back just for looks Alpine stereo with speaker jacks in the bed and a set of box speakers so I can play music outside if I want. 2 block heaters, trans pad heater, front and rear diff heaters, interior heater |

If you really find it gutless, you should get it checked out. Even with the 35's it should take off pretty good. EGR and filter troubles are one thing you should look into. As for mods, two of my favorites are the by pass coolant filter and since I do my own oil changes, Fomoto valve. Next thing I'm throwing into mine is guages. I'll probably stay stock chipwise since I'm relatively happy with the power.

Ok, guys this going to sound real dumb. Guages? What set do i need? Thanks

Echoing what others said... I have a 6.0 with 35's and it is by no means gutless. I have had experience with many 7.3's and I think something is wrong with your motor. Get it figured out before any mods and you may just be happy stock. I am!

Its an 05 with 5k miles?
Right off the bat I'm going to guess that you could have stuck turbo veins. This would for sure affect your performance. |
