Are all pcm's the same?

I was going to put my pcm in my early 99 truck to see if it is a pcm problem. Is there any differenc es or will the 02 pcm work in an early 99?

Yes, it will work. As long as both are autos or both are standards. That's a common mod for the earlies, actually. Better shift strategy & maybe a little better power, too.

I understood it was different, because the early 99 has single shot injectors and the later model 7.3's have split shots.

Ask Hucka1a or Rons Powertroke on how much of a boost they had from the changing out of PCMs make sure you get the code off of it so when you go to put a chip on there Jody can tune for the PCM.

A PCM out of an 02 will not work in an early 99. The communication protocol is different between 99-01 and 02-03.

However, if you have an automatic early 99, a PCM out of an automatic 99.5-01 will work provided the emissions are compatible (Calinazifornia/Federal)

Yep, Cody got it.

In 2002 Ford changed several inputs for the PCM, including the tach and a few others. So swapping a PCM from an 02 to an early 99 will cause some issues. At the very least you'll end up with CEL's constantly illuminated.

Oh crud.... Sorry for missing that. Never even considered it -- but after I wrote that, something bugged me, especially since we have a lot of different stuff in the dash and all.

Thanks for the correction...

I have an early 99 Cali model running an 01 PMT2 federal emissions PCM. All you have to do is rewire the GPR. No more Cali emissions tuning!

I believe the connector changed as well, so an 02 PCM won't even plug into an 01 or prior harness.
